Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for Mas Jullien 2022
Tasting
Colour
The colour reveals a deep ruby hue with burgundy highlights.
Nose
The nose expresses beautiful aromatic complexity, blending blackcurrant and blackberry scents with animal notes, leather and sweet spices.
Palate
The palate combines structural power with remarkable mineral freshness. The tannins are fine and well-defined. The finish lingers on notes of liquorice, tangy sweets and a chalky mineral touch.
Food and wine pairing
This wine pairs ideally with refined Mediterranean cuisine, such as a herb-crusted rack of lamb, duck breast roasted with Timut pepper, or a traditional beef daube à la gardianne. It also pairs wonderfully with matured hard cheeses such as Salers, Laguiole or Cantal.
Service and storage
It is recommended to decant this 2022 vintage approximately thirty minutes before serving. Built for long-term ageing, this wine can be kept in the cellar until around 2041, with an opening recommended from 2026.
The precision and mineral freshness of a red wine from Terrasses du Larzac
The estate
Founded in 1985 by Olivier Jullien, who remains its current owner and winemaker, Mas Jullien profoundly transformed the winegrowing landscape of the Languedoc. By rejecting the cooperative system of the time, this pioneer succeeded in revealing his region's potential. The estate now spans 18 hectares and stands out for its strong philosophical approach, favouring biodynamic practices without official certification in order to guarantee the authentic expression of its terroirs.
The vineyard
Located within the Terrasses du Larzac appellation, the vineyard thrives at altitudes ranging from 150 to over 400 metres. This elevation, combined with the north-westerly winds descending from the Cévennes, ensures cool nights. The vines, farmed according to biodynamic principles with manual or horse ploughing, are rooted in a complex geological mosaic of limestone scree, schist, sandstone and deep marl.
The vintage
2022 proved to be a demanding year for French vineyards, marked by unusual weather patterns and an atypical harvest schedule. However, the estate's specific altitude and microclimate helped soften these climatic extremes, with cool nights preserving the berries' natural acidity throughout the growing cycle.
Winemaking and ageing
Following manual harvesting carried out plot by plot, this wine undergoes 12 months of ageing in small oak barrels. It is then refined in concrete tanks for a further 6 to 12 months before bottling.
Grape varieties
This wine is a blend of Carignan, Mourvèdre and Syrah. A historic and emblematic grape variety of southern France, Carignan brings fine tannic structure here, as well as the freshness essential to the balance of the blend.
