Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for the Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "Les Charmes" 2022 Méo-Camuzet Frère & Sœurs

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals a brilliant ruby red hue of beautiful clarity, adorned with subtle coppery and golden highlights at the rim of the glass.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with notes of black cherry and red fruit, enhanced by floral touches of rose and violet. Delicate woody nuances intertwine with aromas of sweet spice, black pepper and liquorice, which emerge further with aeration.

Palate
Elegant and balanced, the palate reveals a medium body supported by a lovely minerality and silky tannins. A refreshing acidity carries flavours of blackcurrant, black raspberry and plum, stretching towards a long, precise finish full of energy.

Food and wine pairing

This red wine pairs wonderfully with roasted duck breast, feathered game such as pigeon or pheasant, as well as veal accompanied by light mushroom or truffle sauces. Dishes flavoured with fresh herbs will also showcase it beautifully.

Service and storage

This Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "Les Charmes" 2022 can be enjoyed from now, but will continue to evolve favourably to be drunk until around 2032. It is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 16 and 17°C. Decanting is not necessary, although a light aeration of 15 to 30 minutes may help open up its aromas.

Other characteristics

To preserve all its aromatic and textural complexity, this wine is bottled by gravity, without any prior filtration or fining.

The estate

The Méo family's winemaking history began in the 17th century in Burgundy, but it was in 1981 that the estate officially took the name Méo-Camuzet. Now run by Jean-Nicolas Méo, the estate spans approximately 18 hectares in Vosne-Romanée. To expand his range of terroirs while maintaining his commitment to quality, Jean-Nicolas founded the négociant house Méo-Camuzet Frère & Sœurs in the early 2000s. This entity vinifies carefully selected grapes and shares the same philosophy of excellence, controlled yields and environmental respect as the historic estate.

The vineyard

The Les Charmes climat is a prestigious terroir within the Chambolle-Musigny appellation, located on a mid-slope with an eastward orientation. The vines, with an average age of 50 to 52 years, thrive on shallow, very stony soils composed of a mixture of pale and dark clays resting on a limestone base. This particular geology promotes optimal drainage and gives the grapes remarkable aromatic finesse. The vineyard is cultivated using methods inspired by organic farming, including mechanical and horse-drawn ploughing, as well as green harvesting to control yields.

The vintage

2022 began with early budbreak, followed by a few frost episodes in late March. May offered ideal conditions for a uniform flowering. At the end of June, heavy rainfall hit the region, before giving way to hot, dry conditions in July and August, marked by occasional heatwaves. Saving rainfall in mid-August helped revive the vegetative cycle and preserve the acidity of the berries. Manual harvesting began at the end of August under excellent conditions.

Winemaking and aging

The winemaking of the Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "Les Charmes" 2022 is intentionally low-intervention. After a thorough double sorting, whole berries undergo fermentation with strict temperature control and moderate punching down towards the end of the process. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally. The wine is then aged in oak barrels, with a measured proportion of new wood, for 15 to 18 months.

Grape variety

Pinot Noir (100%).
