Description
Tasting Notes and Recommendations for Pagodes de Cos 2006
Tasting Notes
Appearance
Dark and deeply concentrated in its youth, the colour now reveals an elegant medium garnet hue, reflecting its beautiful evolution.
Nose
Rich and remarkably complex, the bouquet exudes aromas of ripe black fruits such as blackcurrant and blueberry. Over time, it has developed noble tertiary notes evoking undergrowth, damp earth and pencil shavings, along with subtle hints of tobacco, leather and smoke.
Palate
The palate is savoury and fresh, with a wonderfully supple texture. Medium-bodied, it displays a classic balance carried by lovely acidity and mellow tannins that still retain a slight grip. The finish lingers on spicy and tobacco nuances.
Food and Wine Pairings
With its notes of undergrowth and tobacco, along with its softened tannic structure, this red wine from France will pair beautifully with roasted meats, slow-cooked stews or mushroom-based dishes.
A Complex and Refined Saint-Estèphe Wine
The Estate
Founded in 1811 by Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel, Château Cos d'Estournel is an iconic estate in Bordeaux. Classified as a Second Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it stands out for its unique exotic architecture, crowned with majestic pagodas. Today, the estate is run by Michel Reybier, who acquired it in 2000. Under his guidance, the estate combines respect for tradition with advanced environmental technology, producing wines of great depth. The estate's second wine has established itself as one of the most highly regarded in the region.
The Vineyard
Located on the heights of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, the vineyard spans approximately 91 hectares. It sits on the Cos hillside, an exceptional geological mosaic composed of a plateau of deep gravel and slopes blending gravel and clay. The estate follows a rigorous environmental approach, certified High Environmental Value, including controlled grass cover and biodiversity preservation. The grapes used for this cuvée come from dedicated plots, with vines averaging 35 years of age.
The Vintage
In the Médoc, 2006 was marked by contrasting weather conditions. Temperatures were generally cooler than average, and rainy spells occurred during the harvest period. Despite this challenging weather, the estate's well-draining terroir allowed the grapes to reach beautiful ripeness.
Winemaking and Ageing
The grapes are hand-harvested in crates, followed by careful sorting. The reception of the harvest and all transfers are carried out entirely by gravity within an ultra-modern winery, in order to preserve the integrity of the fruit. Fermentation takes place separately in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. The blending of the Pagodes de Cos 2006 is done at an early stage, before being transferred into barrels by gravity. The wine is then matured with great care in French oak barrels, allowing for a harmonious integration of the tannins and gentle oxygenation.
