Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz 2024
Tasting
Appearance
The colour is a deep crimson.
Nose
The nose unfolds a richly layered aromatic palette, with ripe fruit at its heart. Oak ageing adds notes of vanilla, chocolate and pastry. Subtle herbal and spicy nuances complete the picture.
Palate
On the palate, the wine is generous and powerful, yet always well held. Juicy acidity brings energy to the mid-palate, while firm, chiselled tannins give structure to the ripe fruit.

The estate
Founded in 1844 with the establishment of the Magill Estate vineyard near Adelaide in South Australia, the House of Penfolds owes its origins to Christopher Rawson Penfold and his wife Mary. It now belongs to Treasury Wine Estates. Peter Gago, the fourth chief winemaker in its history, has overseen winemaking there since 2002. Best known for Grange and for its range of Bin wines, the first of which was launched in 1959, the house favours a multi-regional approach centred on fruit.
The vineyard
The Barossa Valley is one of the oldest and most renowned wine regions in Australia. Its ancient soils support old vines, and its warm, relatively dry climate favours the concentration of tannins and the density of the fruit. It was in this region, at the Kalimna vineyard, that Bin 28 was born in 1959. Although the cuvée is now multi-regional, the Barossa Valley remains at the heart of the wine. For the 2024 vintage, it is joined by several other wine regions of southern Australia, each contributing its share of fruit, structure and freshness.
The vintage
The 2024 vintage in Australia was marked by a rather dry winter, which limited the initial vigour of the vines. Ripening was driven by the heat, particularly in the Barossa, while cool nights in some regions preserved freshness. The harvest took place in dry, stable conditions.
Winemaking and ageing
The Bin 28 Shiraz 2024 is a blend of grapes from several regions, vinified and aged according to the principles of the Penfolds house style. It is aged in American oak hogsheads.
