Description
Tasting Notes and Serving Suggestions for Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2024
Tasting
Colour
The wine shows a deep plum colour with crimson highlights.
Nose
The nose is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, combining sweet spices, blackberry and dark fruit, lifted by floral touches of violet.
Palate
The palate is generous, rich and layered, with a full mid-palate. It unfolds flavours of dark chocolate, cherry and blueberry. Fresh acidity carries the length and maintains balance. The tannins are silky and well integrated. The finish is remarkably long.
Food and Wine Pairing
This wine pairs well with characterful dishes with rich, bold flavours. Penfolds suggests a beef Wellington, with its beef fillet, mushrooms, puff pastry and red wine sauce. The house also mentions an American-style beef burger for a more relaxed occasion. More broadly, it complements red meats, lamb or game, served with reduced sauces and flavourful accompaniments.
Serving and Cellaring
The Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2024 can be enjoyed now. It will continue to evolve favourably for many years to come.
A structured and flavourful blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz from Southern Australia
The Estate
Founded in 1844 at Magill Estate, in the foothills of Adelaide in South Australia, Penfolds owes its beginnings to Christopher and Mary Penfold, who planted their first vines there. The house first made its name with fortified wines before becoming renowned for its age-worthy reds, including Grange, conceived by Max Schubert. Penfolds relies on a multi-regional approach, selecting the finest fruit from several regions across South Australia. The house is now owned by Treasury Wine Estates.
The Vineyard
This red wine from Southern Australia is a blend of grapes from four regions of South Australia: Coonawarra, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Padthaway. Coonawarra has terra rossa soils over limestone and a relatively cool climate, which brings freshness and structure to Cabernet Sauvignon. Barossa Valley contributes the richness and depth of Shiraz. McLaren Vale enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with cool winters, hot summers, low rainfall and moderating sea breezes. Padthaway, with its warmer climate, favours ripeness and flavour intensity in the grapes.
The Vintage
The 2024 vintage was marked by a restrained start to the season, followed by a warm, dry end to the growing cycle. Conditions varied from region to region, with coastal influence in McLaren Vale, heat spells in Barossa Valley and a cooler spring in Coonawarra and Padthaway. The season produced grapes of character with a firm structure.
Winemaking and Maturation
The Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2024 is matured in American oak hogsheads. Part of the maturation takes place in barrels that previously held the preceding vintage of Grange, which earned this cuvée its nickname "Baby Grange".
