Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2022 by Pierre Girardin

Tasting

Colour
The glass reveals an intense, deep and vibrant red colour.

Nose
Expressive and complex, the bouquet first reveals aromas of ripe red fruits such as cherry and blackberry, underscored by spicy notes of pepper and liquorice. With aeration, it evolves towards nuances of undergrowth, a lovely minerality and subtle touches of truffle.

Palate
The palate offers a refined, silky tannic structure. The mid-palate is generous, dominated by flavours of ripe cherry and blackcurrant, perfectly balanced by a fine acidity that brings freshness. The finish is long, mineral and slightly earthy, with lingering notes of fruit and spice.

Food and Wine Pairing

This wine pairs wonderfully with red meats in sauce such as beef bourguignon or tournedos Rossini, as well as braised lamb or coq au vin. It also pairs very well with feathered game, wild mushroom dishes, and matured soft cheeses such as Époisses, Langres or Cîteaux.

Service and Storage

To fully appreciate this 2022 vintage, it is recommended to decant it for between 30 and 60 minutes before serving in order to release its full aromatic complexity. The ideal serving temperature is between 12 and 13°C. This wine can be enjoyed from 2027, but will continue to evolve and can be kept until around 2050.

Other Characteristics

This wine is bottled without fining or filtration, thus preserving all its natural complexity. It may show slight reduction on opening, which dissipates quickly with aeration.

The Elegance and Finesse of a Great Red Burgundy

The Estate

Founded in 2016 in Meursault, at the heart of Burgundy, the Pierre Girardin estate is run by Pierre-Vincent Girardin, representing the thirteenth generation of his family. Having launched his first vintage at just nineteen years old, the current owner quickly established himself as a rising figure in the region. The estate spans 4.5 hectares of its own vines, supplemented by purchases of high-quality grapes. The estate's philosophy is based on minimal intervention, respect for terroir and a conversion to organic farming, producing wines of great purity.

The Vineyard

Clos Vougeot is a historic 50-hectare vineyard, entirely enclosed by walls, founded around 1110 by Cistercian monks. Located on a gentle slope, its complex terroir is made up of limestone conglomerates, pink clay and alluvial deposits. The estate applies sustainable viticultural practices here, guided by the lunar calendar, with entirely hand-harvested grapes to ensure optimal fruit quality.

The Vintage

2022 offered demanding but ultimately successful climatic conditions. The harvest, which took place from late August to mid-September, produced grapes in exceptional health. Despite uneven ripeness across the plots, the weather allowed the berries to achieve a fine balance between alcohol development and the preservation of natural acidity.

Winemaking and Aging

The winemaking of this grand cru favours delicacy, with a fermentation that includes a proportion of whole clusters and a gentle maceration. The estate replaces traditional punching-down with gentle infusion techniques to extract colour and aroma without developing harsh tannins. Aging takes place in traditional 225-litre Burgundian barrels, with a carefully adapted proportion of new oak, before bottling according to the lunar calendar.
