The smoothness and elegance of a great German white wine

The estate

With a winemaking heritage spanning over a millennium, Schloss Johannisberg stands as a major reference among great German wines. Established in the 12th century as a Benedictine monastery, the estate then went through a long period of uncertainty linked to Germany's political and economic upheavals. Paradoxically, these trials enabled Schloss Johannisberg to rise like a phoenix from the vine, even more brilliant and flourishing: all the plots were replanted with riesling, making the estate the first and one of the most prestigious clos dedicated to this grape variety in the world.

The vineyard

This wine comes from a remarkable terroir in Germany. Ideally oriented due south on a slope of approximately 45 degrees, between 114 and 181 meters altitude, the vines benefit from a privileged location. The forest shelters the vineyard from cold winds, while the Rhine, stretching like a lake at the foot of the estate, shapes the expression of the soils. The 50th parallel north runs directly through Schloss Johannisberg, giving the soil, rich in quartz and silt, a marked minerality that enhances the riesling.

The vintage

The year 2024 was marked in the Rheingau region by heavy rainfall causing high disease pressure as well as demanding vineyard management. The late summer, which came in August, hastened veraison and berry ripeness. With the return of showers, the harvest, conducted by hand with jeweler's precision, saved healthy, ripe fruits with lively acidity.

Vinification and aging

Harvested by hand with the greatest care, the berries are then gently pressed in the cellar. Fermentation takes place 20% in large oak casks and 80% in stainless steel tanks.
