An artisanal Japanese blended malt from Nagahama with fruity and chocolatey notes

The Nagahama distillery, a pioneer of artisanal Japanese whisky

Founded in 2016 in Nagahama in Shiga Prefecture, this Japanese artisanal distillery produces single malts but also blended whiskies under the name Amahagan, which is the reverse anagram of Nagahama. Owned by Nagahama Distillery Co. Ltd., it is located on the site of the former Roman brewery, benefiting from the pure waters of Mount Ibuki and its proximity to Lake Biwa. This young house favors blended malts aged in bourbon barrels, without cold filtration or added coloring, developing complex aromatic profiles with notes of orange, chocolate, and vanilla, perfectly embodying the new generation of artisanal Japanese whisky.

The Blended Malt Whisky Edition No.1, the first creation in a global series

Amahagan World Malt Edition No.1 represents the first expression of this unique distillery, which houses the smallest stills in Japan, nicknamed "aranbics" in reference to their shape reminiscent of Arabic architecture. This innovative blend pairs Japanese whiskies with malts imported from abroad, creating a distinctive tasting signature.

Aged in bourbon barrels and presented at 47% alcohol, this blended malt adheres to the house's natural philosophy: no cold filtration nor added coloring. This approach preserves the spirit's aromatic integrity, revealing the full complexity of the waters of Lake Biwa, considered the largest freshwater lake in Japan. Recommended for newcomers thanks to its non-smoky character and approachable fruity flavors, it launches a series of three "World Malts" that testifies to the international ambition of this young Japanese distillery.
