Description

Tasting characteristics and advice for Bache-Gabrielsen Hors d'Âge

Tasting

Appearance

A beautiful, very dark amber hue—intense and deep—reflecting the long maturation of these exceptional eaux-de-vie.

Nose

The bouquet is rich and delicate, unfolding aromas of honey alongside dark berries and subtle woody notes that lend remarkable elegance.

Palate

The attack is powerful, with an almost oily texture—typical of a very old Grande Champagne. The balance between fruity aromas, floral notes and spicy oak flavours is perfect. Endlessly long, the finish reveals indulgent notes of cinnamon, nutmeg and red fruits that linger with elegance.

Food pairings and tasting moments

This cognac is a true contemplation spirit, best enjoyed as a digestif to fully appreciate its complexity. According to the producers, this fresh and authentic cognac can rest almost indefinitely in the cellar.

Mixology

This exceptional cognac deserves to be enjoyed neat, without artifice, in order to honour the nobility of its century-old eaux-de-vie.

A Grande Champagne cognac with century-old eaux-de-vie

Bache-Gabrielsen, a family-run Cognac House since 1905

Founded in 1905 by the Norwegian Thomas Bache-Gabrielsen, this Cognac House remains an independent, family-owned estate, now led by Hervé Bache-Gabrielsen, the founder’s great-great-grandson. Based in Cognac, in Charente, it stands out for its exclusive focus on Grande Champagne, the most prestigious terroir of the appellation. The House Bache-Gabrielsen embraces a long-term philosophy, favouring extended ageing in barrels and rare blends of eaux-de-vie from the Ugni Blanc and Folle Blanche grape varieties. Its unique Norwegian heritage and independence preserved for the past one hundred and twenty years are its hallmarks in the world of Cognac.

A Hors d'Âge cognac with rare richness and refinement

The oldest eaux-de-vie in this blend were distilled during World War I, between 1914 and 1918, while the youngest date from the 1960s. This Hors d'Âge thus brings together eaux-de-vie over 50 years old, primarily from Grande Champagne, made from the Ugni Blanc and Folle Blanche grape varieties. This powerful, oily cuvée embodies the quintessence of the appellation’s most prestigious terroir. This cognac won several awards in 2021, including the World's Best Cognac medal and a gold medal at the International Spirits Challenge, confirming the excellence of this exceptional blend.
