Tasting

Nose
The nose reveals aromas of dark fruit (grape, blackberry, blueberry), lemon and acacia honey, intertwined with coconut milk, peppermint and white flowers. Peppery notes, ash, and candied pear and fig also come through, underpinned by a strongly malty profile with touches of cocoa, coffee, old wood and earth.

Palate
The palate is malty, smoky, peppery and spicy. It reveals medicinal notes, lemon, white fruit (pear, peach), vanilla, coconut milk and fresh walnuts. A harmony of bitter orange, raspberry and an oily, grassy peat comes fully into play. The finish is long, complex, floral and cereal-driven, marked by green notes (barley, alfalfa) and spicy oak.

This single malt is, above all, a whisky for quiet contemplation. It is best enjoyed neat, or with just a splash of water to fully release its aromatic complexity.

Mixology

As an exceptional product from a very limited edition, we strongly recommend drinking it neat, without embellishment. It is not suited to cocktail making.

Bought in 1993 and relaunched in 1998 by the merchant Gordon & MacPhail, it still belongs to the Urquhart family, with Richard Urquhart at its helm. This Benromach Whisky stands out for its small-scale, artisanal production, overseen by a small team of distillers who control every step by hand. Using pure water from the Chapelton Springs and barley sourced exclusively from Scotland, the distillery favours maturation in first-fill casks. The 16 Years Old 1st Fill Super Toscan Itinéraires 2009 is an exceptionally rare single malt, selected specifically for La Maison du Whisky's "Itinéraires" collection. Distilled in 2009, this spirit underwent a full sixteen-year maturation in a first-fill Italian "Super Toscan" red wine cask. This choice of a highly active cask lends the base distillate - traditionally malty and lightly peated - a remarkable oenological dimension, rich in tannins and notes of dark fruit.

This is an extremely limited edition, from a single cask (cask number 582). Bottled at a powerful natural strength of 58.2% ABV, this Benromach Whisky comes in an elegant presentation case.
