The Mars Distillery: Pioneer of Japanese high-altitude whisky
Founded by Kiichiro Iwai, the owner of a shochu producer, the Mars distillery is located in Nagano at an altitude of 800 meters. It was closed in 1992, reopened in 2011, and today belongs to the Hombo Shuzo group. The distillery is also present in Tsunuki (since 2016) and on the island of Yakushima. Mars stands out for its combined production of whisky and regional wines, allowing for unique finishes in Japanese wine casks from its own vineyard. Despite being 60 times smaller than Japan's largest distillery, Mars impresses with its innovative spirit and the quality of its spirits.
