Description

Tasting Notes and Recommendations for The Balvenie 12 Years Old "DoubleWood" Limited Edition Victo Ngai

Tasting

Appearance
A hue ranging from deep caramel to honeyed amber, an enticing visual reflection of its double maturation in American and European oak casks.

Nose
The aromatic profile opens with a warm invitation dominated by honey and toffee, accompanied by custard, baked apple, cinnamon and clove. Gentle aeration, possibly with a few drops of water, reveals bright touches of blood orange, stewed fruits such as plum and apricot, along with subtle hints of peat, toasted nuts and apple-infused oat flakes.

Palate
The attack is wonderfully smooth, favouring an elegant sweetness and fruit over alcoholic intensity. The structure, broad and endowed with a beautiful viscosity, unfolds waves of dark red fruits, raisins and orchard fruits. Indulgent notes of chocolate-covered cherries, candied orange peel, vanilla cream and warming spices add complexity to this rich and perfectly balanced palate.

Food pairings and tasting moments
This spirit is ideal alongside seafood, particularly smoked salmon, whose richness and umami contrast elegantly with the opulence and subtle sweetness of the distillate. For a bolder, more contemporary approach, it pairs beautifully with a high-quality jasmine tea, whose floral notes and slight vegetal bitterness elevate the whisky's fruitiness. Enjoy it neat to capture its full complexity, on the rocks for a refreshing evolution, or with a splash of water to release the full spectrum of its aromas.

Mixology
Thanks to its distinctive aromatic profile and moderate alcohol level, this spirit lends itself to sophisticated cocktails. It excels in revisited classic preparations, particularly those built around honey, citrus or herbs, which respect and amplify its character without ever masking it.

Other characteristics
The finish, smooth and of short to medium length, reveals lingering notes of honey, dark chocolate, toasted oak and cinnamon. Bottled at 40% alcohol by volume, this single malt displays very faint traces of peat perceptible on the nose, blended into an overall framework of great elegance.

A Richly Layered Single Malt Scotch Whisky from The Balvenie

The heritage and craftsmanship of The Balvenie distillery
Founded in 1892 by the visionary William Grant in Dufftown, in the heart of the prestigious Speyside region, The Balvenie is an emblematic figure of Scotch whisky. Today, the distillery operates as a wholly-owned subsidiary of William Grant & Sons, an independent family-owned company that fiercely preserves its heritage. The Balvenie stands out in the contemporary industry through its unwavering commitment to its "Five Rare Crafts". Notably, it maintains its own floor maltings, uses local water from the River Fiddich and operates its own in-house cooperage. Under the stewardship of current Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie, the estate continues to produce single malts of exceptional quality, blending traditional artisanal methods with a long-term vision.

The 12 Years Old "DoubleWood" Limited Edition by Victo Ngai: a legacy shaped by the seasons
The 12 Years Old "DoubleWood" Limited Edition Victo Ngai is a landmark expression that celebrates technical innovation and contemporary art. This Single Malt showcases the pioneering wood finishing technique developed in 1993. The maturation process spans more than twelve years: the distillate first ages in American ex-bourbon oak casks, which impart its notes of vanilla and caramel, before being transferred for a nine-month period into European ex-Oloroso sherry oak casks. The final blend then rests for three to four months in large wooden tuns to harmonise the whole.

For Father's Day 2026, this Scotch whisky dons an exclusive livery designed by Victo Ngai, an internationally renowned illustrator awarded by Forbes. Her creative concept, entitled "A Legacy Shaped by the Seasons", depicts the production cycle through rich visual elements: spring and the pollination of barley, summer and the vitality of the distillery, autumn symbolising transformation, and winter representing maturation. Aimed at discerning enthusiasts in search of understated luxury and artisanal storytelling, this limited edition combines the depth of a great spirit with an immersive visual narrative.
