Appearance

A coppery, orange hue, reflecting a long maturation in oak casks and the singular influence of mizunara wood.

Nose

Remarkably complex, it opens on notes of peat smoke carried by a sea breeze, blended with the warm sweetness of a caramelised crème brûlée. With aeration, aromas of honey, beeswax, tropical pineapple, nutmeg and ginger emerge, underlined by a soft and elegant smoky character.

Palate

The attack offers a perfect harmony between a light smokiness, a pronounced sweetness and ripe fruits. The palate evolves towards complex dimensions of dark fruits, warm spices, cocoa and mature oak. Notes of mandarin, prune, dark chocolate and dried cherry intertwine with a honeyed malt, delivering a round and smooth texture. The finish is bold and persistent, marked by rich peat, dried fruits (fig, date), walnut, gingerbread and spicy oak.

Food pairings and tasting moments

This exceptional spirit is ideally enjoyed neat or with a very light dilution, at room temperature, in a copita or tulip-style glass. Adding a few drops of water reveals subtle notes of pear and almond biscotti. On the gastronomic side, it enhances desserts made with dark chocolate (particularly those spiced with cardamom or black pepper), aged crystallised-paste cheeses such as vintage cheddar or Parmigiano Reggiano, as well as desserts featuring honey and tropical fruits. It also pairs wonderfully with umami-rich Japanese cuisine, such as grilled fish or yakitori.

Mixology

Although it stands beautifully on its own, its complexity lends itself to refined creations. It shines in a Manhattan-style preparation, combined with vermouth and aromatic bitters. In a Japanese spirit, it fits perfectly into minimalist cocktails using touches of yuzu juice, shichimi spices or umami elements derived from kombu, thereby honouring the nobility of the spirit.

The heritage and excellence of the Nikka distillery

Founded in 1934 by the visionary Masataka Taketsuru in Yoichi, on the island of Hokkaido, Nikka is an essential pillar of Japanese Whisky. Drawing on his training in Scotland, Taketsuru established his distilleries in regions with ideal climatic conditions: Yoichi, with its direct coal-fired heating, and Miyagikyo, founded in 1969, favouring indirect steam heating. Now owned by the Asahi group, the company perpetuates this philosophy that combines traditional Scottish methods with Japanese precision. In 2025, Junji Iseki took the helm of creation by becoming the new Chief Blender, succeeding Hiromi Ozaki. This transition marks a new era for Nikka, which continues to push the boundaries of excellence while honouring its rich historical heritage and its unique expertise in fermentation and maturation.

Created to celebrate the appointment of Junji Iseki as Chief Blender, The Nikka Limited 2025 Release Premium Blended Whisky is a liquid work of art. This exceptionally rare Whisky is built upon a masterful assemblage of legendary components: a 1989 Yoichi aged in mizunara cask, a 1979 Miyagikyo also matured in mizunara for more than four decades, and a Scotch whisky from the Ben Nevis distillery dating from the 1980s.

The prolonged use of Japanese mizunara oak imparts to this Premium Blended Whisky incomparable exotic spicy notes, while the contribution of Ben Nevis grants it a unique Highland texture and character. Although the presence of this Scottish component excludes it from the strict classification of Japanese whisky under the 2021 standards, it embodies the perfect bridge between the Scottish and Japanese traditions so dear to the founder.
