Description

Characteristics and Tasting Tips for Travesia 1908 2020 by Tiano & Nareno

Tasting

Colour
The wine displays a deep purple colour with vivid violet highlights.

Nose
The nose reveals remarkable aromatic complexity, with notes of ripe black and red fruit, particularly blackcurrant, alongside violet flowers. As the wine breathes, aromas of black pepper, dark chocolate and vanilla emerge, enhanced by subtle hints of liquorice and coffee.

Palate
On the palate, this wine delivers dense black fruit with flavours of blackberry and black cherry. The whole is carried by a striking freshness, thanks to an acidity that brings brightness and vivacity. The fine, powdery, slightly firm tannins lend structure and elegance without dominating the palate. The balance between the fruit intensity, the perfectly integrated alcohol and the bright acidity creates remarkable harmony. Delicate herbaceous and slightly candied notes add a further dimension to the tasting experience.

Food and Wine Pairing

This wine pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted beef, particularly dry-aged cuts. It is also a perfect match for game such as venison, wild boar or duck, as well as lamb dishes. Aged goat's cheeses with mineral notes also make a harmonious pairing.

Serving and Cellaring

Travesia 1908 2020 should be served at around 16°C. For optimal enjoyment, it is recommended to decant the wine one hour before serving, or to open the bottle in advance to allow it to breathe.

An Exceptional Malbec from Mendoza

The Estate

Tiano & Nareno was founded in 2010 by Ariel Savina, the grandson of two Italian immigrants who arrived in Argentina in 1908. Based in Paris and working in the pharmaceutical industry, Savina wished to reconnect with his family's winemaking heritage by partnering with Didier Depond, president of Champagne Salon and Delamotte, and the renowned Argentine oenologist Roberto de la Mota. The estate covers seven hectares in Luján de Cuyo, in the province of Mendoza. Inspired by the philosophy of Champagne Salon, Tiano & Nareno only produces wine in exceptional years, with just seven vintages released since its creation.

The Vineyard

The Tiano & Nareno vineyard covers seven hectares in Luján de Cuyo, in the Mendoza region, at an altitude of around one thousand metres at the foot of the Andes. The plots enjoy a desert climate with three hundred days of sunshine a year and significant temperature differences between day and night. The stony, well-drained soils of alluvial origin, with limestone deposits, encourage the expression of the terroir. The Malbec vines, averaging 80 to 85 years old, with some over 100 years old, together with Cabernet Franc vines aged 65 to 70 years, form an exceptional genetic heritage. Ungrafted, these pre-phylloxera vines represent a rare viticultural resource. The estate practises sustainable viticulture, with hand harvesting and rigorous grape selection.

The Vintage

The 2020 vintage in Argentina was marked by hot, dry and early conditions in the Mendoza region. These conditions enabled attentive producers to craft structured, concentrated red wines while retaining remarkable freshness. This combination of concentration and vivacity proved particularly favourable for producing wines built for long ageing.

Winemaking and Ageing

Travesia 1908 2020 is made with an approach that respects both the fruit and the terroir. Part of the harvest is vinified as whole bunches, a technique that brings floral and herbaceous notes as well as a silky texture. The wine is aged in French oak barrels for around six months, allowing a subtle integration of oak aromas without masking the expression of the fruit. This moderate ageing period promotes controlled oxygenation, which develops the wine's complexity while preserving its freshness.
