Vinous

Antonio Galloni

The 2022 Barbaresco Rabajà is another classy, polished wine from the Rocca family. The breadth and power of Rabajà are evident in this strapping young Barbaresco. Dark Nebbiolo fruit, rose petal, mint, dried herbs and gravel are some of the many notes that come alive in the glass. This really explodes on the back end. Superb.

James Suckling

Aldo Fiordelli

A reductive style with red currants and fresh flowers. Time in the glass brings out vibrant, peppery aromas, wild strawberries and violets. Medium-bodied and firm on the palate, this shows austere tannins and moderate acidity. Stern in the finish with a touch of leafiness. Try from 2028.

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of Bruno Rocca's Barbaresco 2022

Tasting

Colour
This Italian red wine displays a deep garnet hue, enhanced by subtle ruby highlights that shift towards a lighter garnet at the edges of the glass. The whole shines with great clarity.

Nose
Wonderfully complex, the bouquet opens with intense aromas of fresh black fruits such as blackberry, plum and black cherry. Delicate floral notes of rose and violet then intertwine with spicy touches, cocoa, liquorice and eucalyptus, with a very light hint of aniseed in the background.

Palate
Warm and elegant, the attack reveals delicious notes of ripe cherry and raspberry. The mid-palate reveals a fine mineral and spicy structure, supported by firm yet perfectly integrated tannins. Vibrant acidity brings plenty of freshness, leading to a long, silky finish with cocoa and earthy accents.

Food and wine pairing

This wine pairs wonderfully with dishes rich in flavour. It will beautifully complement braised meats, mushroom or hazelnut risotto, as well as fresh pasta served with meat ragout or white truffle. Roasted poultry with rosemary or aged hard cheeses such as Parmesan also make excellent choices.

Service and storage

For optimal enjoyment, it is recommended to store this wine lying flat, away from light, at a temperature between 10 and 15°C. It will reach its peak after a few years of cellaring and can be enjoyed until around 2034.

The elegance and authentic expression of Piedmontese terroir by Bruno Rocca

The estate

Located in the Piedmont region, the Bruno Rocca estate was officially founded in 1978 when Bruno decided to produce wine under his own name, although the family had been cultivating these lands since the 19th century. Today, Bruno Rocca, together with his children Francesco in the vineyard and Luisa in sales, runs this family estate. Renowned for its focus on elegance rather than power, the estate places great importance on respecting the environment through sustainable practices, thus reflecting the true soul of its terroir.

The vineyard

The grapes used for this cuvée come from plots aged 20 to 25 years, located in the commune of Neive within the Barbaresco appellation. Rising to between 200 and 370 metres in altitude, these vines thrive on sandy and tufaceous soils. The estate applies environmentally friendly viticultural methods, favouring natural cover crops between the rows to preserve ecological balance and vine health.

The vintage

The year 2022 was marked by a second consecutive year of drought, with a winter almost entirely lacking snow, severely limiting water reserves. These extreme conditions, combined with a heatwave in early September, led to an early growing cycle and advanced harvests. To adapt, the vines concentrated their sugars and phenolic compounds in smaller berries.

Winemaking and aging

After manual harvesting and rigorous sorting, the grapes are destemmed and then gently pressed. Fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks over 30 to 35 days. The wine is then aged for 12 to 14 months in French oak barrels, where malolactic fermentation occurs naturally, before being blended and bottled.

Grape variety

Nebbiolo (100%).
