Decanter

Aromas of plum, raspberry, loam and wet stone minerality suggest the pedigree beneath. The palate is decidedly structured, almost reminiscent of grape skins tasted at harvest, with a firm, tightly wound tannic frame. A more muscular style of Domaine de Chevalier. At 12.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.71, the wine walks a fine line: the freshening acidity (particularly on the finish) both lifts and accentuates the abundant tannins. For now, it remains firm, but the underlying material is strong and should harmonise with élevage, making full barrel ageing key to unlocking a full expression. Tasted three times with two more positive impressions, the score reflects the wine’s anticipated evolution rather than its current state.

Mesquite wood, black cherries, cigar box, blue fruits, espresso, and spice fill the aromatics. There is freshness, purity, and elegance here that is impossible to ignore. On the palate, the fruit is clean, with a smoky edge, a hint of spice, and a vibrancy that adds to the length and precision. Give it just a few years in the bottle, and this promises to be a beauty. According to Olivier Bernard, the key to the vintage was the warm, dry summer, followed by the refreshing September rains. The wine blends 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc.12.5% ABV, pH 3.71. Yields were 34 hectoliters per hectare. Harvest took place September 11-September 26. This is the earliest finish to a harvest in the history of Domaine de Chevalier. Drink from 2029-2060. 96-98 Pts

Beautiful depths, precision and clarity on the aromatics, delivers juice and depth with clarity of cassis and blackcurrant flavour. There is still the grip of the vintage in terms of its structure, but this is an estate where you can feel totally confident that things will widen and deepen over ageing. 3.71pH. Harvest September 3 to 29. 30% new oak. In organic conversion. Derenoncourt Consultants, Olivier Bernard owner working with his sons Adrien and Hugo. Tasted twice.

Wonderfully intense, the bouquet of Domaine de Chevalier 2025 stands out for its complexity and its ability to bridge ripe-fruit notes with floral nuances, while a touch of oak ageing works subtly in the background. The creamy, supple attack sets the stage for a linear, seamless progression. The tannins gradually unfold, reaching the peak of their power on the finish. They provide an outstanding backbone and reinforce the structure alongside an acidity that is both refreshing and shaping. A full-bodied, expressive wine driven by incisive, bright character.

Beautiful deep, intense red. Highly aromatic nose, refined, fruity and silky. Delicate on entry, savory through the mid-palate, the wine develops with juicy character and a fine texture, leading to a slightly firm yet aromatic, persistent finish. Blend: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot. Alcohol: 12.5%.

Vinum

Ripe-fruited nose, with tobacco spice, mocha, blackberries and black cherries; a fruity attack that then builds, with a creamy texture—opulent yet not heavy—rich fruit, fine-grained tannins and a very good acid structure; a long, oak-barrel-driven finish. Shows very good potential.

Description

Tasting notes and characteristics of Domaine de Chevalier red 2025

Tasting

Nose
The bouquet opens on a seductive marriage of red and black fruits at their freshest, gradually enhanced by empyreumatic nuances and elegant spicy touches, faithful reflections of the terroir. The expression is intense, precise and particularly promising for the future.

Palate
The attack is enveloping and velvety, revealing a fleshy, intensely fruity substance that caresses a tannic structure of rare density and finesse — as silky as a thread of silk. The exemplary ripeness of the tannins lends the whole a remarkable suppleness, while the underlying freshness brings tension and brightness. The long, refined finish bears witness to a great wine that combines immediate pleasure with strong ageing potential.

A silky, dense Grand Cru Classé from Pessac-Léognan

The estate
Founded in the 16th century under the name Chivaley, Domaine de Chevalier is a standard-bearer of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, on the outskirts of Bordeaux. Since 1983, Olivier Bernard has carried on a winegrowing tradition of excellence. The estate stands out for its unique terroir of gravel, sand and clay, and a single-block vineyard. It produces high-quality red and white wines, all from the same terroir, and is recognised as a Grand Cru Classé de Graves.

The vineyard
Located in the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, the Domaine de Chevalier vineyard extends over 67 hectares, including 60 devoted to red grape varieties. The vines flourish on a gravelly soil resting on a clay-gravel subsoil, an ideal terroir for Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up the majority of the plantings. The most prestigious parcels are home to 50-year-old Cabernets, bringing concentration and complexity to the wine.

The vintage
The 2025 vintage benefited from exceptional weather conditions: a rainy winter ensuring good water reserves, a mild spring favouring an early and even flowering, then a hot, dry summer allowing optimal ripening of the grapes. The harvest, spread out from late August to 26 September, was carried out under excellent conditions, with satisfying yields. The result is wines of great aromatic richness, combining freshness, complexity and elegance, in both white and red.

Winemaking and ageing
Hand-harvesting in small crates. Meticulous sorting in the vineyard and then in the cellar, with the berries optically sorted after destemming. Plot-by-plot vinification is carried out in four types of vat (steel, stainless steel, concrete tulips, wood) for optimal selection. Ageing then continues for 16 to 18 months in barrels, one third of which are new oak.

Blend
63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc.
