A generous, well-balanced Mâcon-Péronne crafted by Verget in Burgundy
The estate
Founded in 1990 by Jean-Marie Guffens, the Verget House has established itself as an essential reference in Burgundy. Based in Sologny in the heart of the Mâconnais, this négociant house stands out for its revolutionary approach: purchasing grapes at harvest rather than finished wines, allowing total control over vinification. Verget works with winegrowers selected for their rigor and respect for the terroir. Today, Julien Desplans, who joined in 2006 and trained notably at Romanée-Conti, oversees purchasing and vinification under the direction of Jean-Marie Guffens. The House is renowned for its white wines of exceptional purity and precision, true expressions of their terroirs of origin.
The vineyard
Mâcon-Péronne is a regional appellation located in the heart of the Mâconnais, on both sides of the Bicheron River. The vineyard benefits from a remarkable geological duality: on the western slope in Saint-Pierre-de-Lanques, the soils are composed of clay and flint with no limestone, while on the eastern slope in Péronne, there are stony limestone marls from the Lower Jurassic. This diversity of terroirs gives the wines a distinctive aromatic complexity, combining the generosity of limestone soils with the discreet intensity of siliceous terroirs. The region’s oceanic climate with a southern influence promotes optimal ripening of chardonnay while preserving the hallmark freshness of white wines from Burgundy.
The vintage
The 2021 vintage in Burgundy proved particularly demanding. After devastating frosts in April, May was marked by cool temperatures. Summer was wet, with recurring hail threats. Harvest began in mid-September but was interrupted several times by rain, requiring rigorous selection work. A major rainy episode of 100 millimeters led to the development of botrytis in certain plots. These challenging conditions resulted in a drastic reduction in volumes. Only the finest grapes, harvested at optimal ripeness despite the climatic constraints, were vinified.
Vinification and aging
For the Mâcon-Péronne "Les Légères" 2021, Verget implemented its signature methodology. The grapes were lightly crushed before gentle pressing using a Coquard-type pneumatic press, enabling precise, controlled extraction. Vinification took place partly in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks and partly in 300-liter oak barrels, with a maximum of 25% new oak. The wine underwent aging on fine lees for around 9 months, developing its creamy texture and aromatic complexity. Malolactic fermentation occurred naturally, bringing buttery notes while preserving the wine’s liveliness. Bottling was carried out at the end of June with minimal filtration.
Grape variety
100% chardonnay.
