James Suckling

Ned Goodwin MW

While the cooler and more detailed 2016 is a hard act to follow, this does so with admirable aplomb despite the more typical heat of 2018. Mulled cherries, aniseed, camphor, mossy undergrowth, shiitake mushrooms and dashi. The mid-palate is savory, nourishing and slathered with umami. Aromatic and textural, with the oak and mineral notes providing tension. The finish runs very long and fresh. This is excellent. Sustainable. Drink or hold.

Description

Characteristics and Tasting Recommendations for Allegrini's 2018 Riserva Fieramonte

Tasting

Remarkably balanced between richness and freshness, this vintage combines savory notes of ripe and dried fruits, dried flowers, coffee and cigar box, and dark chocolate, with tension of rare intensity.

Service and Cellaring

For optimal tasting, serve at 18°C after opening the bottle one hour in advance. This wine from the Veneto can be cellared until around 2038 to fully express its aromatic profile. *

Food and Wine Pairings

Roast lamb, wild boar, well-aged cheeses, or even 90% dark chocolate are refined pairings with this cuvée.

The Refinement and Expression of a Great Wine from the Veneto

The Estate

Allegrini, the leading producer of the Valpolicella appellation, is among the most emblematic and internationally recognized Italian houses. Established since the 16th century, the Allegrini family now cultivates over 100 hectares of vineyards, spread across the most prestigious crus of Valpolicella in Italy. The result of ancestral know-how passed down through generations and a perfect mastery of the Appassimento technique (grape drying), Allegrini's Amarone wines stand out for their strong personality and inimitable style.

The Vineyard

The Riserva Fieramonte from Allegrini is an Amarone della Valpolicella Classico hailing from a vineyard located at 415 meters above sea level, on a stony soil rich in minerals such as magnesium and iron. The vines have an average age of 18 years.

The Vintage

The 2018 vintage was marked by significant rainfall in spring and again shortly before harvest. The mild weather in September, combined with a wide diurnal temperature range, promoted grape maturation.

Winemaking and Aging

Hand-harvested and sorted, the grapes are naturally dried for several weeks in a dedicated facility, losing 40 to 45% of their original weight. In January, the grapes are destemmed and gently pressed. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, followed by 48 months of aging in French oak barrels. The wines are then blended for 6 months before bottling. A final one-year bottle aging stage is carried out before the cuvée is released.

Blend

Corvina veronese (45%), corvinone (45%), rondinella (5%) and oseleta (5%).
