Description

Tasting notes and recommendations for the Chassagne-Montrachet 1er cru "Morgeot" 2022 from Armand Heitz

Tasting

Appearance

The wine displays a ruby-red hue with subtle, delicate highlights.

Nose

The nose reveals an intense and complex bouquet dominated by aromas of sweet cherries and vibrant strawberries. With aeration, notes of mushrooms and undergrowth emerge, adding an extra dimension to the aromatic expression.

Palate

On the palate, this wine charms with its silky texture and fine, delicate tannins. The structure is marked by a beautiful saline complexity that runs across the palate, leading to a long and persistent, almost captivating finish. The overall impression favors finesse and elegance rather than power.

Food and wine pairings

This red Chassagne-Montrachet 1er cru "Morgeot" 2022 pairs ideally with grilled meats and aged cheeses. Its delicacy also allows it to enhance mushroom-based dishes or poultry prepared with light sauces.

Serving and cellaring

This Chassagne-Montrachet 1er cru "Morgeot" 2022 is best enjoyed at a temperature between 16 and 18°C. It can be enjoyed now but also offers cellaring potential until around 2037.

The estate

Armand Heitz rebuilt the family winegrowing heritage from 2011, whose origins date back to 1857. Based in Chassagne-Montrachet in Burgundy, the estate now covers around 20 hectares spread across prestigious appellations of the Côte de Beaune. Trained at the Changins engineering school in Switzerland, Armand has developed an approach based on agroecology and regenerative agriculture. The estate stands out for integrating diversified activities including livestock farming, permaculture and wine tourism at Château de Mimande.

The vineyard

This Chassagne-Montrachet 1er cru Morgeot comes from parcels located in the southern part of the climat, positioned immediately below the climats Romanée and Grandes Ruchottes. These parcels benefit from soils enriched with clay and stones, giving freshness, purity and delicacy to the expression of Pinot Noir. The south-southeast exposure provides optimal sunshine throughout the day. The climat Morgeot, established around 1150 by the Cistercian monks of the Abbey of Cîteaux, takes its name from the Gaulish term meaning “boundary”, reflecting its border position between Côte-d'Or and Saône-et-Loire. The vines are managed according to the principles of regenerative agriculture with diversified plant cover, mulching and respect for sap flows.

The vintage

The 2022 vintage was marked by exceptionally hot and dry climatic conditions. From April to September, the average temperature was significantly higher than the Burgundian norm. Rainfall was limited, creating a pronounced water deficit. These conditions required significant viticultural adaptations, notably the management of cover crops in parcels suffering from water stress and the application of mulching to preserve moisture. Winter pruning helped limit the impact of spring frosts. The harvest was staggered to respect the optimal ripeness of each parcel, making it possible to pick healthy and balanced grapes despite the climatic challenges.

Winemaking and ageing

The vinification of the red Chassagne-Montrachet 1er cru "Morgeot" 2022 follows a minimalist approach. Fermentation takes place at ambient temperature with indigenous yeasts, accompanied by limited pump-overs and punch-downs to preserve the expression of the terroir. Ageing takes place in barrels for around 18 months, without racking, allowing the wine to naturally develop its structure and depth.
