Description
The Elegance and Finesse of a Grand Cru from Burgundy by Chandon de Briailles
The Estate
Established in 1834, the Chandon de Briailles estate is a historic property located in the heart of Burgundy, in the commune of Savigny-lès-Beaune. Spanning a vineyard of 13.7 hectares, this family-run estate is now led by brother-and-sister duo Claude and François de Nicolay. Pioneers at heart, they carry on a heritage of more than 190 years while cultivating their vines according to the demanding principles of biodynamics. The estate stands out for its artisanal approach and deep respect for terroir, resulting in wines of remarkable purity.
The Vineyard
The Maréchaudes climat is located to the north of Aloxe-Corton, at the foot of the famous Corton hill. This historic terroir, whose name evokes former marshland drained through drainage works, benefits from an excellent east-southeast exposure, making it one of the sunniest sectors of the hill. The vines thrive on stony, clay-limestone soils, which promote optimal grape ripeness while lending a beautiful minerality.
The Vintage
2023 stood out for an exceptional abundance in the vineyards of Burgundy, requiring meticulous work. After a winter with mild temperatures, July brought coolness and rainfall, slowing down the growing cycle. Finally, a heatwave at the end of August allowed the berries to quickly reach ideal ripeness.
Winemaking and Aging
The philosophy in the cellar is minimalist and purist for this Corton Grand Cru "Maréchaudes" 2023. Fermentation takes place naturally in conical wooden vats, favoring the use of whole clusters through a gentle infusion technique. Extraction is carried out with great delicacy using a vertical press. Aging continues with a very small proportion of new barrels, not exceeding 20%, with the remainder aging in barrels that are several years old. The wine is finally bottled without any fining or filtration.
Grape Variety
100% Pinot Noir.
