The Elegance and Purity of a Great White Burgundy by Chandon de Briailles
The Estate
Founded in 1834, the Chandon de Briailles estate is a key reference in Burgundy. Located in Savigny-lès-Beaune, this historic property oversees a vineyard cultivated using biodynamic methods. Now belonging to Count and Countess Aymard-Claude de Nicolay, the estate is brilliantly run by their children, Claude and François de Nicolay. Thanks to a philosophy respectful of the terroir and innovative farming practices, the family carries on an ancestral expertise to produce wines of remarkable purity and elegance.
The Vineyard
The terroir behind this white Pernand-Vergelesses lies on east-facing mid-slope hillsides. The vines thrive on marl-limestone soils, perfectly suited to expressing Chardonnay. The estate favours an approach respectful of biodiversity, with controlled yields and meticulous soil work, partly carried out using draft horses to preserve the vitality of the land.
The Vintage
The year 2022 was marked by contrasting climatic conditions, with a mild winter and a hot, dry summer. The vines were able to draw on the soil's water reserves to produce grapes of exceptional ripeness, while retaining a lovely acidity, a guarantee of balance and freshness for the region's white wines.
Winemaking and Aging
The making of this Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru "Ile des Vergelesses" 2022 relies on a minimal-intervention approach. After gentle pressing, the musts ferment naturally thanks to indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged for an extended period in oak barrels (with a very small proportion of new wood) and in tanks, allowing it to preserve the authentic expression of the fruit and the mineral tension of the terroir.
Grape Variety
Chardonnay (100%).
