Decanter

According to Claude de Nicolay, the east-facing slopes of Ile des Vergelesses provide a marvellous terroir for Pinot Noir. She has 2.80 hectares in Pinot and 1.20 ha in Chardonnay. Her favourite block is the hectare of vines planted in the 1960s. This old-vine massale selection vine material is the jewel and has given a forward, supple wine with aromas of black cherry and plum. The texture is lithe and easy, yet there is enough tannin on the finish to convince us to age it — a delight.

Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru "Ile des Vergelesses" 2022 Chandon de Briailles

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals a deep ruby hue with garnet highlights.

Nose
The bouquet reveals elegant aromas of red and black fruits, cherry and plum, underscored by a mineral and saline undertone. Subtle floral touches, freshly turned earth and a hint of menthol further enrich this olfactory palette.

Palate
Full-bodied and round, the palate seduces with its balance and structure. Intense flavours of black fruits intertwine with saline and iodine notes typical of its terroir. The tannins are supple and silky, leading to a persistent finish marked by minerality and delicate herbaceous nuances.

Food and Wine Pairing

This red wine pairs wonderfully with flavourful meats such as roasted or braised veal in sauce, grilled lamb or feathered game like pheasant or guinea fowl. Its saline minerality also allows it to accompany shellfish served with a butter sauce, as well as regional cheeses such as Reblochon, Mont d'Or or aged goat cheeses.

Service and Storage

For optimal tasting, it is recommended to serve this Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru "Ile des Vergelesses" 2022 at a temperature between 16 and 17°C. This wine, built for ageing, can be kept in the cellar and will be fully enjoyable until around 2045.

Other Characteristics

This wine has a moderate alcohol content of approximately 13.5%.

The Mineral Elegance of a Premier Cru from Burgundy by Chandon de Briailles

The Estate

Founded in 1834 by Pierre Guillemot, the Chandon de Briailles estate is a historic property located in Savigny-lès-Beaune, at the heart of Burgundy, France. Spanning nearly 14 hectares, this vineyard is now run by siblings Claude and François de Nicolay, who embody the family's continuity. A pioneer in its environmental approach, the estate stands out for its biodynamic-certified viticulture, its exclusive use of draft horses for working the soil, and its innovative natural treatments. These artisanal methods give rise to authentic wines that are pure reflections of their terroirs.

The Vineyard

The Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru "Ile des Vergelesses" 2022 comes from a 2.1-hectare plot dedicated to red grape varieties, nestled within a 9.4-hectare climat on a mid-slope. Situated at an altitude ranging from 270 to 285 metres, the vines benefit from an ideal south-east exposure and a steady slope that ensures perfect drainage. The terroir is made up of complex soils blending marl, limestone deposits and clay-iron elements, giving the wine its unique mineral signature. The estate favours meticulous manual work and a natural approach to preserve biodiversity and vine health.

The Vintage

The year 2022 offered very favourable weather conditions for the vines. After a start to the growing season marked by a rainfall deficit, strategic rainfall at the end of June and mid-August helped avoid excessive water stress. Boosted by above-seasonal-average temperatures and record sunshine, this vintage ensured optimal phenolic ripening of the berries, which were harvested between late August and early September.

Winemaking and Aging

The creation of the Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru "Ile des Vergelesses" 2022 is based on a philosophy of minimal intervention. After rigorous sorting, the mostly whole clusters ferment naturally thanks to indigenous yeasts in open wooden or concrete vats. A maceration period of about fifteen days, punctuated by manual pumping-over and punching-down, allows for gentle extraction. Transfers are carried out by gravity to preserve the wine's delicacy. The wine is then aged for 14 to 20 months in 228-litre French oak barrels, with a very small proportion of new wood, within historic cellars dating back to the thirteenth century.
