Vinum

Luminous ruby red; delicate aromas of cherry, blood orange, marzipan and blackberry, with floral nuances and subtle toasted notes; delicate on the palate, remarkably precise, starting quietly, building intensity, gliding over the tongue, great tension, showing energy, finesse, elegance and a very good, aromatic length. A Burgundy‑styled Ausone that will be approachable early.

Decanter

A creamy, crisp nose of cherry and raspberry yoghurt, alive and focused. Initially sharp with a punch of acidity, it turns strict and linear, framed by well-integrated tannins with a spiced, cool liquorice edge. Serious yet controlled, it offers clarity, precision, and purity, with mouthwatering acidity and minty, graphite terroir notes. Not as full as some, but faultless, it’s structured, suave, and racy, with shiny, long-lasting flavour. A yield of 33 hl/ha. 3.5 pH, and 100% new oak ageing, no press wine. A en primeur blend as wines are still ageing separately.

Intensely floral on the nose, you also find oceanic influences, mint, spice, smoke, licorice, black raspberries, cherries, and plums. Medium-bodied, elegant, fresh, and juicy, the marine influence from the limestone terroir is notably strong this year, enhancing the vibrancy, length, lift, and complexity of the wine. For Ausone, you will be able to enjoy this early, with only a modicum of aging. The wine blends 65% Cabernet Franc with 35% Merlot. 13.67% ABV, 3.54 pH. Harvest took place September 30 - October 5. Production was smaller than usual. Drink from 2030-2065. 95-97 pts

Le Figaro Vin

A nose driven by stony minerality, where refined dark fruits (black cherry, blackcurrant) and a touch of iris unfold. The palate is sumptuous and enveloping, carried by lovely, shimmering aromatic fruit. The substance stretches on at length, with breadth, in a brushed‑silk texture. A wine of superb harmony.

Deep ruby in colour, this delivers texture and flavoursome sappy fruits, clear winemaking skill that maintains estate signature. You feel the tightrope walk of minerality and fruit, and as in 2021 Ausone is at the very top of what was possible in the vintage. Cassis bud, peony, violet, cloves, jasmine flowers, chamomile, subtle complexity and layers that expand and build through the palate. The successful construction of this wine highlights what was so challeging to fully achieve with so many others in the vintage. Harvest 30 September 5 October, Philippe Baillarguet cellar master. 100% new oak.

Dark, intense, beautiful colour. A highly aromatic nose—refined, pure, fruity and complex. Notes of flowers and raspberry emerge as the glass is swirled. An exceptionally precise texture from the very first sip. The wine unfolds on a melt-in-the-mouth structure with remarkable sweetness. Sleek in profile, it develops with juicy, fragrant, lingering length. A subtle, noble, deep whole—impossible to spit out. Blend: 65% Cabernet Franc, 35% Merlot. Alcohol content: 13.67%. Yield: 33 hl/ha. Production: 80% grand vin.

An iconic Saint-Émilion wine from an exceptional terroir

The estate

Founded on a heritage dating back to Roman times, the Château Ausone, located in Saint-Émilion, is a jewel among the great wines of Bordeaux. Since the 13th century, only three families have owned this estate, now managed by the eleventh generation of the Vauthier family. Its very name evokes the Roman poet Ausone, who, according to legend, owned a villa on these lands.

The vineyard

The 7.25-hectare vineyard stretches across the limestone slopes of Saint-Émilion, benefiting from ideal exposure and an exceptional terroir composed of crinoidal limestone, particularly rare in the appellation. This rock, formed of marine fossils, imparts to the wines a distinctive minerality and characteristic tension. The vines have an average age of 56 years, contributing to the wine's depth and complexity.

Winemaking and aging

After a meticulous hand-harvest and rigorous sorting, the grapes are vinified parcel by parcel in small wooden vats. The wine is aged in new French oak barrels for 20 months.

Blend

65% Cabernet Franc and 35% Merlot.
