Tasting
This vintage stands out for its delicate balance of elegance, harmony and freshness, and for its aromatic richness.
The refinement and aromatic expression of a Premier Cru Classé from Sauternes
The estate
Château Climens has been part of the winemaking heritage of Bordeaux since at least 1547. Located in the Barsac appellation and nicknamed the “Lord of Barsac” early in its history, the estate has kept the same structure and size for more than 200 years.
Run by Bérénice Lurton since 1992, Château Climens has been owned by the Moitry family since July 2022.
The vineyard
Tending a 13-hectare terroir, Château Climens is one of the few Bordeaux Grands Crus Classés so deeply committed to the environment, with fully biodynamic practices since 2010 and systematic certification of the vineyard since 2014. 2016 also marked an important milestone for this Barsac wine, as it was awarded the “Wine made from Demeter grapes” label. This label recognises the estate’s winemaking practices as well as the farming of its vineyard, where the vines average 48 years of age.
The vintage
A mild winter encouraged early budburst. A frost episode followed on the night of 4 to 5 April, but thanks to the teams’ diligence, it did not affect the old vines used to produce this cuvée. Alternating rain and heat then led to rapid vine growth, along with heavy mildew pressure, millerandage and coulure. Despite measures taken in line with biodynamic principles, these affected three quarters of the vineyard.
Vinification and ageing
Fermentation with indigenous yeasts in new barrels. Aged on fine lees for 20 months in barrels (80%, of which 40% new) & Wine Globe (20%).
Grape variety
Sémillon (100%).
