Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of the Château de Marsannay Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2023
Tasting
Colour
This French red wine reveals a deep, brilliant cherry hue, enhanced by delicate ruby nuances.
Nose
Expressive and powerful, the aromatic bouquet opens with notes of black fruits such as blackcurrant and black cherry. It then evolves towards spicy touches, fresh tobacco and undergrowth notes typical of its grape variety.
Palate
The architecture of this wine proves complex and perfectly structured. The acidity brings a lovely freshness that balances the whole, while the smooth tannins and subtly integrated oak accompany an exceptional aromatic persistence.
Food and wine pairing
This grand cru pairs wonderfully with characterful meats such as roast duck, pheasant or venison, particularly when accompanied by mushrooms or a wine reduction. It also enhances lean cuts of beef such as filet mignon, herb-crusted lamb chops, a traditional coq au vin, or hard, aged cheeses such as Comté or Gruyère.
Service and storage
Endowed with remarkable potential, this Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2023 can be cellared and will continue to evolve favourably, ready to be enjoyed until around 2043.
The authentic expression of a great Burgundy terroir by Château de Marsannay
The estate
Built in its current form in 1990, Château de Marsannay is a key figure in Burgundy. Located at the gateway to the Côte de Nuits, the estate oversees a 40-hectare vineyard certified organic. Acquired in 2012 by its current owner, Olivier Halley, the estate has undergone a genuine transformation towards excellence. Under the technical direction of Sylvain Pabion, the estate favours a meticulous plot-by-plot approach and agroecological practices, allowing each terroir to reveal its singularity through exceptional cuvées.
The vineyard
The Clos Vougeot plot farmed by the estate covers a modest surface area of 2,140 square metres. Ideally located on the lower, central part of the slope with an eastern exposure, these vines thrive on deep soils composed of brown clay, limestone and gravel. This geological configuration ensures excellent water retention and brings great mineral complexity. The vineyard is managed according to agroecological principles, incorporating cover crops and tree planting to preserve biodiversity.
The vintage
The year 2023 began with a particularly mild and dry winter and early spring. Rainfall in March helped replenish the soils' water reserves, encouraging even flowering in May. Despite a stormy June, the end of summer proved mild. An unusual heatwave in September helped speed up the final ripening of the berries, which were harvested in mid-September in the cool of the morning.
Winemaking and aging
The making of this Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2023 is based on a philosophy of minimal intervention, allowing the terroir to fully express itself. Following morning harvests, the berries undergo an ultra-selective sorting process to retain only fruit of impeccable quality. Plot-by-plot vinification is combined with gentle extraction and carefully controlled aging in oak, allowing the woody notes to be integrated without masking the wine's identity.
