Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of the Marsannay Village "Les Favières" 2022 Château de Marsannay
Tasting notes
Colour
Reveals a deep, intense carmine red hue, reflecting fine ripeness without excessive concentration.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet is dense and complex. It opens with vibrant notes of red and black fruits such as morello cherry, raspberry, blueberry and blackcurrant. These are joined by subtle touches of undergrowth and mushroom, enhanced by spicy nuances of black pepper, cardamom and clove, along with a fine mineral chalky imprint.
Palate
Fleshy and elegant, the attack unfolds generous fruit supported by beautifully fine, perfectly integrated tannins. There is a remarkable balance between structural power and the freshness of the natural acidity. The finish, persistent and complex, lingers on a lovely chalky minerality.
Food and wine pairing
This French red wine pairs wonderfully with roasted or grilled red meats, beef fillet or roast pork. It also matches beautifully with delicate game such as venison, roasted poultry, and mushroom-based stews. As for cheese, it enhances soft cheeses when young and more characterful cheeses like Époisses after a few years of aging.
Service and storage
Approachable now to enjoy its vibrant fruit, this Marsannay Village "Les Favières" 2022 also boasts a fine structure allowing it to evolve favourably in the cellar. It can be enjoyed until around 2032.
The authentic expression of a great Burgundy terroir by Château de Marsannay
The estate
Established in its current form in 1990, Château de Marsannay is a key name in Burgundy. Located at the gateway to the Côte de Nuits, the estate spans 34 hectares of vines, complemented by the management of plots belonging to the Hospices de Dijon. Acquired in 2012 by its current owner, Olivier Halley, the estate has undergone a genuine qualitative revolution under the guidance of its estate manager, Sylvain Pabion. Certified organic since 2021, the property now favours micro-vinifications to reveal the unique identity of each climat.
The vineyard
The climat Les Favières lies at the heart of the Marsannay appellation, on a slope facing east-southeast at an altitude ranging between 260 and 320 metres. This small 0.7-hectare plot rests on complex soils from the Middle Jurassic period, combining crinoidal limestone and marl. The vineyard is farmed according to organic principles, incorporating environmentally respectful practices such as horse ploughing, Poussard pruning and the use of plant-based decoctions to preserve biodiversity and soil vitality.
The vintage
The year 2022 was marked by extreme climatic conditions, with exceptional heat and intense summer drought. Following a mild winter and ideal flowering, welcome rainfall at the end of June helped hydrate the vines. In August, timely rainfall unlocked grape ripening, ultimately yielding a healthy, balanced harvest with lovely natural acidity.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes for the Marsannay Village "Les Favières" 2022 are hand-harvested and rigorously sorted. Following partial destemming, a few days of cold maceration precede alcoholic fermentation, punctuated by measured punching down and pumping over. The wine is then aged for thirteen months in French oak barrels, 40% of which are new, before finishing with a three-month refinement period in stainless steel tanks. Intervention is kept to a minimum, with very limited filtration to preserve the authenticity of the fruit.
Grape variety
100% Pinot Noir.
