A blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2013 Montlandrie is deep garnet in color, with a touch of brick. It has a surprisingly youthful nose of black raspberries, juicy plums, and Morello cherries, plus suggestions of candied violets, sandalwood, and dusty soil, with a hint of mint tea. The medium-bodied palate is lively and soft-textured, with bright, vivacious fruit and a perfumed finish. Such a surprise for this very difficult vintage!

Tasting

Color

The color reveals a deep garnet hue with subtle brick highlights, reflecting the wine’s maturity.

Nose

The nose displays lovely aromatic complexity, with notes of black raspberries, juicy plums and Morello cherries. Hints of candied violet, sandalwood and dusty earth round out the bouquet, along with a subtle touch of mint tea.

Palate

On the palate, the wine is lively and silky, with a medium body and fine-grained tannins that lend an elegant structure. Flavors of blackcurrant and redcurrant come through with freshness, supported by a chalky minerality. The finish is long and fresh, lingering on cedar notes with fine tannic tension.

Food and wine pairings

This Château Montlandrie 2013 pairs perfectly with grilled meats, roast lamb or a beef stew. It also matches very well with mushroom-based dishes or aged cheeses.

Serving and cellaring

Château Montlandrie 2013 is best enjoyed at a temperature of 15.5°C. One hour of decanting allows the wine to fully open up. This vintage can be kept until around 2028.

A structured and elegant Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux by Denis Durantou

The estate

Created at the end of the 19th century, Château Montlandrie is an approximately 12-hectare vineyard located in Bordeaux, in the Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, on clay-limestone soils overlooking the Dordogne. It was purchased in 2009 by Denis Durantou, owner of the famous Château L'Église-Clinet in Pomerol. Planted mainly with merlot, complemented by cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon, the estate claims a mineral signature linked to its limestone soils.

The vineyard

The Château Montlandrie vineyard stretches across a clay-limestone plateau at around 86 meters above sea level, benefiting from ideal southern exposure. The soils of the Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux appellation are made up of clay and limestone on the plateau, with more gravelly formations closer to the Dordogne. This privileged setting on the limestone terrace, similar to that of Saint-Émilion, gives the wines distinctive minerality and great elegance.

The vintage

The 2013 vintage proved challenging throughout the Bordelais. Despite delicate weather conditions, the harvest took place between October 5 and 9, 2013, with a rigorous selection of grapes making it possible to achieve remarkable quality given the context.

Winemaking and aging

Château Montlandrie 2013 was carefully vinified and then aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, 50% of which were new. This aging method adds complexity to the wine while preserving the expression of the fruit and the terroir.

Grape variety

Merlot and cabernet franc form the base of the blend, complemented for the first time in 2013 by 5% cabernet sauvignon from vines planted in 2009.
