Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for Château Moulin Saint-Georges 2013
Tasting
Color
The color reveals a ruby red hue.
Nose
The nose opens with vibrant aromas of red fruits, notably raspberry and cherry, accompanied by delicate floral notes. With aeration, scents of fennel and licorice emerge, complemented by touches of dried herbs, mint, and sage that add complexity to the whole.
Palate
On the palate, the wine reveals itself as elegant and fresh, with a lively attack. The tannic structure unfolds delicately yet distinctly, offering a silky texture. The palate remains pure and well-defined, with a medium body that avoids any heaviness. Supple yet firmly structured tannins support a remarkably long finish, where notes of fennel and red fruits persist, leading to an elegant, dry mineral conclusion.
Food and Wine Pairing
This Château Moulin Saint-Georges 2013 pairs harmoniously with grilled or roasted red meats, particularly herb-crusted lamb, where the wine's herbaceous notes resonate with the dish's aromatics. Roasted duck breast is also a classic pairing, the duck's unctuousness blending superbly with the wine's measured richness. Hard cheeses such as Comté or Beaufort, as well as wild mushroom preparations, particularly porcini or truffle risottos, complete this wine perfectly.
Serving and Aging

An Elegant and Refined Saint-Émilion Grand Cru from the Vauthier Family
The Estate
Château Moulin Saint-Georges is an exceptional wine estate located in Saint-Émilion, acquired in 1921 by the Vauthier family, who also own the prestigious Château Ausone. Situated just 200 meters south of the town of Saint-Émilion, facing Château Ausone, the estate spans 7 to 8 hectares. Now led by the fifth generation of the Vauthier family, represented by Pauline, Édouard, and Constance Vauthier, Château Moulin Saint-Georges benefits from the technical expertise developed at Château Ausone while maintaining its own distinct identity. The estate is renowned for producing elegant and complex wines, considered among the best-kept secrets of the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation.
The Vineyard
The vineyard of Château Moulin Saint-Georges occupies an exceptional geographical position on the limestone slopes south of Saint-Émilion, benefiting from a west to northwest exposure. The clay-limestone soils, characterized by the predominance of limestone with a significant clay component, give the wine fundamental mineral characteristics while promoting slow ripening of the Merlot. The Fongaban stream, which flows near the estate, provides exceptional natural drainage. The vines, averaging 26 to 30 years old at the time of the 2013 vintage's production, are planted at densities ranging from 5,500 to 12,600 vines per hectare. The Vauthier family employs environmentally friendly viticultural practices, operating according to organic principles, with entirely manual harvesting and rigorous grape sorting.
The Vintage
The 2013 vintage in Bordeaux was marked by exceptionally difficult weather conditions. The cold, wet spring caused late flowering and significant coulure, particularly affecting the Merlot. Storms in late July and early August hindered the halt of vegetative growth before veraison, while the mild, humid autumn created an environment conducive to the development of gray rot. Faced with these challenges, the Vauthier family maintained its philosophy of quality, harvesting only grapes with genuine maturity, resulting in a particularly low yield of 25 hectoliters per hectare. Despite these adverse conditions, the 2013 vintage stands out for its elegance and characteristic freshness.
Vinification and Aging
Fermentation of the Château Moulin Saint-Georges 2013 took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, allowing optimal temperature management. Fermentation and maceration lasted approximately 4 to 5 weeks. After pressing, malolactic fermentation took place in French oak barrels. The wine was aged in 85% new barrels for 18 months, imparting notes of vanilla and fine wood that blend harmoniously with the red fruits without overpowering them. This approach allows the expression of terroir to take precedence over the characteristics imparted by the wood.
Grape Varieties
Merlot (80%)
Cabernet Franc (20%)
