Château Pavie Macquin 2022

Floral yet meaty on the nose, toasted aromas, coriander, sour cherries, complex; structured palate, plenty of tension, crisp, perfectly ripe fruit, breed, density, precision, finesse; herbal, mineral finish that lingers long. Great potential.

The 2022 Pavie Macquin has turned out nicely, offering up aromas of dark berries, licorice, bay leaf and pencil shavings, followed by a medium- to full-bodied, dense and layered palate that's lively, concentrated and controlled, with excellent integration and length. Youthfully reticent, it will require a bit of patience.

Gorgeously aromatic, this throws off aromas and flavors of violet, plum sauce, açaí berry puree and boysenberry preserves that are carried by the very polished structure. A subtle chalky thread curls through on the finish as the fruit lingers beautifully. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2027 through 2040. 4,400 cases made.

Strong aromatics of dried herbs, blackcurrant leaf, violets, cherries and chocolate. Fleshy and ripe in the mouth with both a sweet, sour and cool aspect to the juicy strawberry acidity that makes this so moreish and zingy in the mouth. Energetic and dynamic, concentrated and streamlined, there's so much to like here with really tasty terroir markers of wet stones, graphite and pencil lead. No sign of heat or overt oak which makes this even more enjoyable right now but this will also age excellently. Extremely classy and packed full of flavour.

The intensity of raspberries, stones, chalk and sea salt is impressive. White pepper. Medium-bodied with really crunchy fruit, yet the firm and creamy tannins are very well curated, with a polished texture and a superb finish. Long and powerful. Such energy. Try after 2029, but it’s hard not to drink before.

The 2022 Pavie Macquin is stellar, as it was en primeur. Inky blue/purplish fruit, licorice, new leather, spice and plum run through this powerful Saint-Émilion. Silky in the glass, it boasts plush, seamless tannins and fine balance. As always, Pavie Macquin is very sexy—one of the most sensual and hedonistic wines of the vintage.

The striking perfume, with its showy display of cherry blossoms, licorice, black fruits, dark cherries, orange rind, and cigar wrappers sets the tone for the wine. On the palate, it is the opulent, silky fruits with their purity, length, freshness, and seamless finish, with the silky-textured palate presence that steals the show. The wine blends 80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink from 2028-2060.

80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, 1% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31 hl/ha. Densely interwoven, exalted bouquet with blackberry jelly, perfumed pipe tobacco, chocolate pastilles, and captivating violet perfume. On the palate, sublimely straight with a silky texture, fine-grained extract richness, and a tightly knit tannic frame. The concentrated finish delivers a fireworks of dark-berry contours, profound terroir spice, and noble astringency. This rough diamond has everything in the right place; it ranks among the finest wines of the Appellation.

A safe pair of hands in such an extreme vintage, and this is certainly a port in a storm. Lovely textured, rippling with dark black cherries, cherry pit for a savoury touch, sage and rosemary and white pepper spice. Totally gorgeous, one of the wines of the vintage. Corre-Macquin family, 31 hl/ha yield. 12.8 ha, 35 years average age of vines, clay-limestone soils on the plateau.

A classy, pedigree nose revealing delicate floral and fruit aromas with admirable restraint. The palate impresses with its purity and precision, driven by vibrant tension and a silky texture. Its chalky minerality lends remarkable length. Exquisitely refined, it’s almost impossible to resist the urge to swallow.

The bouquet of Pavie Macquin immediately reveals ambitions devoted to subtlety, freshness and precision. Add complexity to that, as the nose alternates between ripeness, freshness, depth and gentle spices, with notes of mint, raspberries, blackberries and cocoa beans respectively. On the palate, the wine doesn’t necessarily aim for density; it prefers to showcase its subtlety, precision and freshness. Supported by powerful tannins, the wine boasts serene vigor and brightness. A deep, sapid and persistent Pavie Macquin.

Beautiful deep, dark purple-red. Intense nose with ripe, subtle fruit. Fleshy on the attack, very flavorful mid-palate, with a precise touch; the wine unfolds into a deep finish, full of flavor and silky tannins. Good length. Blend: 80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. Alcohol: 14.5%. Yield: 31 hl/ha.

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, brightening on the rim. Fine wood spice with vanilla and cloves, ripe black-berry fruit, dark cherries, inviting bouquet. Complex, fresh and juicy, lively structure, salty minerality, black wild berries, full of finesse and lingering finish. A very animating wine, ripe cherries on the aftertaste, with some ageing potential.
