Château Peby Faugères 2021

Dark fruit, mineral notes, tobacco, dark fruit. Perfectly balanced on the palate, straighter and less overloaded than before, with great length and a saline finish. A successful Péby Faugeres that can age.

Offers a mulled vanilla note that hangs over a modest core of dried plum and black cherry fruit, with a tobacco accent lingering on the toasty finish. Drink now through 2025. 1,082 cases made.

Strongly scented and quite ripe and potent on the nose. Quite closed and oaky, the fruit is clearly concentrated and the acidity brings lift and brightness, but it also feels a bit pushed and, as such, the frame and texture slightly take over from the mid-palate at this point, with some wood notes and dry tannins. Give this a few years before opening.

The 2021 Péby Faugères continues to show a more restrained style of winemaking compared to older vintages. Quite composed on the nose, a mélange of red and black fruit, cedar and dried violets unfolds in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, a keen line of acidity and a composed finish that maybe just needs a little more complexity. One bottle showed well, while another felt rather overdone and presented a little VA on the finish, hence the question mark.

Espresso, black cherries, dark chocolate and licorice crowd into the perfume. Forward, opulent, fresh and rich, the wine is packed with crushed stones, cherries and dark cocoa, all wrapped up in its lusciously textured, polished finish. This is the first vintage produced in their new showpiece cellars. The wine is produced from 100% old-vine Merlot. Drink from 2025–2047.

Intense garnet, opaque core, purple reflections, broader rim. Delicate leather and nougat, ripe blackberry fruit, hints of candied orange zest, tobacco nuances. Complex, fine blackberry nuances, some cassis, ripe tannins, chocolatey and textural; good ageing potential.

Ripe black fruits, smoked earth, leather, and graphite notes emerge from the 2021 Château Péby Faugères, one of the more powerful, concentrated, textured wines in the vintage. Its medium to full body, juicy spine of acidity, and fine tannins all make it a beautiful, elegant Saint-Emilion that will have at least two decades of overall longevity. The 2021 is all Merlot and spent 16 months in 50% new French oak. Tasted twice with consistent notes.

Open bouquet of dark berries, Demassine, elderberry juice and licorice. On the compact palate, a silky texture with finely grained extract, incredibly dense and deep, tightly knit with a muscular body. In the concentrated, taut finish, wild cherry, dark graphite, delicate meaty notes in the background, ending with a finely crumbly astringency; a wine with great potential.

Kunz barrel sample 2022: (100% Merlot, 22 hl/ha, production 13,000 bottles) Creamy, dense, full, complex, sweet bouquet; raspberry jelly, mint, nougat, candied fruit, slate, smoke, pralines. Tightly woven, creamy, multi-layered, elegant palate with dense, fresh, delicate fruit, varied, powerful, sweet aromatics, plenty of fine tannins, a delicately muscular, elegant structure, and a very long, dense, aromatic, fresh finish with many lingering flavors. Has room to improve.

Balanced and elegant, this vintage shows density and complexity, with enticing aromas of wild berries, cherry and plums that linger and develop on the palate, with a smooth finale.

The 2021 Peby Faugeres has a medium to deep garnet-purple color. It needs a lot of swirling to coax out notes of plum preserves, juicy blueberries, and black raspberries, followed by hints of charcoal, black truffles, and tapenade. The medium-bodied palate is packed with bright black fruit layers and a firm, grainy texture, finishing long and refreshing.

An evolved nose with floral and prune notes, reminiscent of a liqueur. On the palate, the wine is slightly dusty and tired, but a few red-fruit notes can still be perceived.

Péby remains Péby… and rightly so! It’s a style, a character; it’s a wine you either love or don’t love! That shouldn’t prevent us from rating it. The en primeur sample had given me a hard time… while the version “

Beautiful dark color. Moderately aromatic nose with ripe fruit. Soft, fruity, pleasant palate, lacking definition on the finish. Medium length.

Pure Merlot, this wine comes from a specific parcel of the Faugères estate. It is an opulent wine, proudly showing its origins from old vines. Dense black fruits and concentrated tannins are pierced with acidity and a smoky richness. Drink from 2027. Organic.
