Wine Enthusiast

J.P.

This Barolo offers an alluring bouquet of ripe black fruits, warm spices, and a touch of sweet tobacco. Blackberries, black cherries, and plums are generously layered with notes of cinnamon, clove, and a hint of vanilla. On the palate, the ample fruit is complemented by a medley of sweet spices and warmed herbs. Well-structured tannins provide a solid frame for the mixed fruits to hold court as savory and more earthy notes bide their time. Drink Now - 2040

Wine Spectator

Bruce Sanderson

Rich, lively and saturated with fruit, this red boasts cherry, black currant, plum, floral, earth and spice aromas and flavors. Deftly balanced and bursting with energy that drives the persistent aftertaste. Decant now, yet this is better with a few more years aging in bottle. Best from 2027 through 2047. 500 cases made.

Jim Gordon

Deep, full and complex, this powerful wine is beautifully structured, laced with fine-grained tannins and tangy acidity. New leather, balsam, tar and orange zest complement tangy red cherries and tamarind notes. From organically grown grapes. Best from 2028.

This Barolo unfolds perfectly with game in all its forms: wild boar, roe deer, deer, or pigeon. It also pairs excellently with braised roasts and harmonizes wonderfully with truffle dishes, especially duck ravioli or cardoon flan with fondue.

Service and storage

The Bricco Gattera 2020 is ideally served at a temperature of 16°C. This wine is pleasant in its youth yet possesses exceptional aging potential, allowing it to develop positively until around 2050.

An exceptional Barolo from old vines in La Morra

The estate

Cordero di Montezemolo is an Italian estate in Piedmont, located in Monfalletto in the heart of La Morra. Managed by Giovanni and Enrico Cordero di Montezemolo, the estate carries on a centuries-old family tradition. The property, recognizable by its majestic Cedar of Lebanon planted in 1856, cultivates Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbera, and Arneis with a remarkable historical identity.

The vineyard

The Gattera vineyard extends over approximately one hectare around the estate in the municipality of La Morra. Located at an altitude of 280 meters with a southeast exposure, it benefits from silty soils with clay and a moderate proportion of sand, poor in active limestone but rich in magnesium and manganese. The oldest vines reach an average age of 30 to 60 years and lend this Barolo wine all its complexity.

The vintage

The 2020 vintage in Piedmont was characterized by favorable climatic conditions that allowed for optimal ripening of the Nebbiolo, producing wines of great elegance and exceptional aging potential.

Winemaking and aging

After manual harvesting, which began in October, the grapes are immediately crushed and destemmed. Fermentation and maceration take place for 15 days in stainless steel tanks at 25°C. Malolactic fermentation takes place in oak barrels. The 18 to 20-month aging process combines 228-liter French barriques and Slavonian casks of up to 3000 liters, followed by 18 to 20 months of bottle aging.

Grape variety

This Barolo is produced exclusively from Nebbiolo, the king grape variety of Piedmont, expressing here all the typicity of this exceptional terroir.
