Characteristics and tasting notes of Volnay Village 2020 Domaine Caroline Frey
Tasting
Colour
With its intense, brilliant ruby colour, this wine captivates the eye from first sight.
Nose
Highly expressive, the bouquet reveals great aromatic complexity, blending red and black fruit notes while allowing subtle nuances characteristic of its terroir to emerge.
Palate
The palate stands out for its roundness and velvety texture. It unfolds aromas of red and black fruit, enriched with hints of violet, blackcurrant and cherry. The whole is supported by wonderfully fine tannins, offering a fine structure and a long aromatic finish.
Food and wine pairing
This red wine pairs beautifully with roast poultry, delicate stews, offal such as liver or kidneys, as well as dishes with Mediterranean accents. It also pairs perfectly with well-matured cheeses such as brie or camembert.
Service and storage
With fine ageing potential, this Volnay Village 2020 can be enjoyed young for its freshness, while also holding great potential for complex development in the cellar over several years.
The elegance and aromatic richness of a Volnay wine
The estate
Located in Burgundy, at the foot of the Corton hill, Domaine Caroline Frey spans 7 hectares. While the site's winemaking origins date back to the 8th century, the estate in its current form was created in 2015 by Caroline Frey. A pioneer of biodynamic viticulture, she brought an environmentally respectful philosophy to the estate. In July 2025, the owner announced her withdrawal from management in order to focus on her Swiss vineyards. A change in leadership is thus expected by the end of summer 2026 to carry on the excellence of this estate.
The vineyard
The Volnay terroir, nestled on the slopes of the Chaignot hill, benefits from an ideal south-east exposure for the gradual ripening of the berries. The vines thrive on well-drained soils, made up of clay and Bathonian limestone marl. The estate favours a biodynamic and sustainable approach, deliberately limiting yields to ensure optimal grape quality.
The vintage
The year's climatic conditions made it possible to achieve berries of remarkable concentration, shaping the identity and balance of this vintage.
Winemaking and ageing
Crafted in a cellar fully renovated in 2017, this Volnay Village 2020 benefits from a serene ageing process in French oak barrels. The proportion of new barrels is kept at around 30% in order to preserve the wine's balance and purity.
Grape variety
100% Pinot Noir.
