Decanter

We tasted an assortment of barrels from the 2022 vintage: one from the southern end of Bonnes-Mares, one from the middle, and one from the north. The portion from the south showed supple, elegant results with lovely fruit and impressive length. The center shows a lovely richness and density, and the sample from the northern end of the vineyard showed more reduction, but there was lovely finesse and an elegant raspberry note. The blend should produce one of the wines of the vintage in this appellation.

This great Bonnes Mares starts cool and restrained, but expands rapidly as it moves over the palate, with delicate, spicy almond and cream character. Mouth-filling and generous yet subtle and light-footed, this is at the upper limit of medium-bodied. Then a huge wave of salty minerality comes through at the finish to give the wine a whole extra dimension and making this an almost overwhelming expression of beauty. Drinkable now.

Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2022 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals a red hue.

Nose
The bouquet opens with red fruit aromas such as cherry, raspberry and strawberry. It then evolves towards floral notes of violet and peony, rounded out by hints of spice and undergrowth.

Palate
The attack is delicate and restrained. The palate reveals a silky texture supported by velvety tannins and refreshing acidity. Flavours of black fruits such as blackcurrant and blackberry mingle with subtle notes of coffee and tobacco, leading to a long, mineral finish.

Food and Wine Pairing
This wine pairs perfectly with roasted game meats, such as duck or pheasant. It also goes well with delicate poultry or cuts of lamb served pink. It is best to avoid overly rich sauces and overly strong cheeses.

Serving and Cellaring
For an optimal tasting experience of this Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2022, serving between 14 and 16°C in large glasses is recommended. This wine has great ageing potential and can be enjoyed until around 2040.

The Elegance and Structure of a Burgundy Wine

The Estate
Founded around 1450 by Jean Moisson, Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue is a historic figure in Burgundy. Located in Chambolle-Musigny, France, the estate spans just over 12 hectares. Today, sisters Claire de Causans and Marie de Ladoucette run the estate, carrying on the family legacy. Together with cellar master Jean Lupatelli, the approach favours low yields and a deep respect for the environment in order to precisely express the identity of each plot.

The Vineyard
Bonnes-Mares is a terroir located in the commune of Chambolle-Musigny. The estate cultivates around 2.7 hectares there, east-facing at an altitude of between 250 and 280 metres. The vines grow on clay-rich red soils, layered over a bedrock of limestone and white marl. The soil is worked with great care, including ploughing with horses to preserve biodiversity and soil structure.

The Vintage
The year began with early budding at the end of March, followed by a few frost episodes in April. Spring then brought warm, dry conditions, allowing for rapid flowering in mid-May. Summer was marked by a long drought, fortunately tempered by rainfall at the end of June and throughout the summer period. Harvest took place in early September amid intense heat.

Winemaking and Ageing
The Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2022 grapes are harvested into small 20-kilo wooden crates. The grapes are then moved using a pneumatic lift to avoid damaging them. Vinification includes 50% whole clusters. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally in autumn, following directly after alcoholic fermentation.
