Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Charmes-Chambertin 2023 Domaine Henri Rebourseau
Tasting
Colour
This red wine displays a beautifully intense colour.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet reveals wonderful complexity, blending scents of smoked berries, wild fruit and peony. These are joined by subtle notes of cinnamon and orange zest, along with touches evoking damp earth.
Palate
Full-bodied and fleshy, the palate reveals a complete structure supported by fine, velvety tannins. Beautiful acidic tension brings perfect balance to the tasting. The long, oaky finish unfolds flavours of blueberries and wild strawberries, enhanced by mineral nuances of iodine and bay leaf.
Food and Wine Pairing
This wine pairs perfectly with roasted or grilled red meats, such as rib of beef. It also beautifully accompanies game such as wild boar or pheasant, as well as spiced dishes like a meat tagine. When it comes to cheese, it enhances an Époisses, a Langres or a matured Camembert.
Service and Storage
With fine ageing potential, this Charmes-Chambertin 2023 can be cellared and enjoyed until around 2043.
The Elegance and Depth of a Grand Cru from Gevrey-Chambertin
The Estate
The family's winemaking history began in 1782 in Côte d'Or, but it was in 1919 that General Henri Rebourseau founded the current estate. Located at the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin in Burgundy, Domaine Henri Rebourseau oversees a 13.5-hectare vineyard cultivated using biodynamic practices. Since 2018, the Bouygues family has held majority ownership of the estate. However, management remains within the family, now handled by Bénigne and Louis de Surrel, under the supervision of Hervé Berland. The estate is distinguished by its rare heritage of single-block plots.
The Vineyard
The Charmes-Chambertin cuvée comes from a 1.32-hectare plot. The vines, averaging 35 years old, thrive on limestone outcrops covered with shallow soils rich in marl pebbles and iron. The estate deliberately limits its yields to 25 hectolitres per hectare to prioritise the quality of the berries.
The Vintage
2023 ranks among the hottest years ever recorded in the region, even surpassing the temperatures of the previous year. Despite this pronounced heat, the growing cycle allowed for the harvest of berries with remarkable balance and freshness.
Winemaking and Aging
The Charmes-Chambertin 2023 inaugurates the estate's brand-new cellar facilities. Winemaking favours gentle extraction, with tank fermentation lasting 14 to 17 days. Ageing takes place over 18 months in oak barrels, with a moderate proportion of new oak at around 40%, preserving the authentic expression of the terroir before bottling.
Grape Variety
100% Pinot Noir.
