Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru "Cuvée des Alouettes" 2022 Domaine Ponsot
Tasting
Colour
The colour reveals a deep, bright ruby red hue.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with delicate notes of red fruits, such as cherry and raspberry, underscored by fine spicy touches and subtle floral nuances that emerge with aeration.
Palate
The palate offers an elegant structure, carried by a refreshing, well-integrated acidity. Deep and concentrated, it shows structured tannins with a slight firmness. The long, lingering finish stands out with saline, umami notes and a touch of woody herbs.
Food and Wine Pairing
This red wine pairs beautifully with roast duck with mushrooms, delicate beef dishes such as tartare or carpaccio, as well as game such as venison with herbs or braised rabbit.
Service and Storage
For the best tasting experience of the Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru "Cuvée des Alouettes" 2022, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 16 and 18°C, taking care to decant it beforehand. This wine, built for aging, can be cellared and enjoyed until around 2042.
The Authentic Expression of a Morey-Saint-Denis Terroir by Domaine Ponsot
The Estate
Founded in 1872 by William Ponsot, Domaine Ponsot is a historic name in Burgundy, located on the Côte de Nuits. Now led by Rose-Marie Ponsot, the estate carries on a nature-respecting philosophy, marked by the achievement of organic certification in 2022. The estate stands out for its traditional methods, such as late harvesting and the absence of new oak barrels, while embracing modern technologies to guarantee the authenticity of its bottles.
The Vineyard
This wine comes from a plot of about one hectare within the climat Monts Luisants, in Morey-Saint-Denis. The vines, around twenty years old and planted at a high density of 11,000 vines per hectare, thrive on shallow soils made up of clay and limestone scree resting on a bedrock of Comblanchien limestone. This terroir also benefits from cooling winds coming from the neighboring combe.
The Vintage
The year 2022 was marked by hot, dry weather conditions, leading to the earliest harvest recorded since 1893. Despite this heat, the water reserves accumulated during the rainy 2021 vintage allowed the vines to maintain good balance. The growing cycle produced berries with thick skins, offering fine ripeness while retaining a refreshing acidity.
Winemaking and Aging
To craft the Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru "Cuvée des Alouettes" 2022, the grapes are entirely destemmed. Fermentation begins naturally thanks to indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled wooden vats, accompanied by punching down and pumping over over a period of about three weeks. The wine is then aged on the lees for 16 to 24 months in French oak barrels around twenty years old, without any intermediate racking. Before bottling, a single manual racking is carried out, without fining or mechanical filtration.
