Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of Les Hautes Garrigues 2022 Domaine Santa Duc
Tasting notes
Colour
The colour of this red wine reflects meticulous extraction, revealing the full natural depth of the grapes.
Nose
The nose opens onto an aromatic development of great complexity, carried by a very pure mineral expression.
Palate
On the palate, the attack reveals intensely concentrated grape flavours. The whole offers a perfect balance between power and refinement, underpinned by a deep minerality and a particularly elegant structure.
Service and storage
Endowed with exceptional aging potential, Les Hautes Garrigues 2022 is a wine built for very long cellaring. When tasting older bottles, careful decanting is recommended to separate the natural sediment that may form over time.
Other characteristics
The total absence of fining and filtration at bottling helps preserve the wine's integrity and complexity, which explains the possible presence of natural sediment.
The authentic expression of a great Gigondas terroir by Domaine Santa Duc
The estate
Founded in 1874, Domaine Santa Duc is a historic estate of the Gigondas appellation, located in the southern Rhône Valley. Now led by Benjamin Gras, representing the sixth generation, the estate spans around twenty hectares. A pioneer of sustainable viticulture under the impetus of Yves Gras as early as 1985, the vineyard is now certified organic and biodynamic. The house's philosophy is rooted in a deep respect for the terroir, aiming to produce wines that combine Rhône power with great Burgundian finesse.
The vineyard
The vines dedicated to this cuvée flourish on the famous Hautes Garrigues plateau, within the Gigondas appellation. This distinctive terroir consists of poor, well-draining red clay soils, dotted with numerous limestone-rich pebbles. At a depth of around eight metres lies a layer of blue clay. This unique geological configuration forces the root systems of the old vines to dig deep, generating a natural stress that heightens the concentration of the berries and the mineral identity of the cru.
Blend
This wine comes from a blend composed of equal parts Grenache and Mourvèdre.
Winemaking and aging
For Les Hautes Garrigues 2022, the bunches are hand-harvested into small crates before undergoing rigorous sorting at the winery. Fermentation, carried out exclusively with indigenous yeasts, takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks over twenty to thirty days. Aging then continues for eighteen months in 36-hectolitre Austrian foudres and eight-hectolitre terracotta amphorae, a method that favours slow oxidative maturation without excessive oak influence.
Grape varieties
Grenache (50%), Mourvèdre (50%)
