Stuart Pigott

Bold and rich, with huge yellow fruit and ample structure on the succulent medium- to full-bodied palate. Lively acidity, but it’s the fine tannins that drive the long, quite dramatic finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Anne Krebiehl MW

The 2022 Riesling Heimbourg was picked next to the Brand Grand Cru from two steep parcels, one south-west-facing, the other entirely west, rooting in poor iron-rich limestone. A touch of reduction casts a flinty haze on absolutely zesty citrus that unites Meyer lemon, grapefruit and tangerine. The palate is ripe and juicy with serene, expansive acidity that spreads a grapefruit zestiness. Beautifully nuanced aromatics make for a succulent, refreshing wine. (Bone-Dry)

Yves Beck

Oligocene limestone, red soil. Plenty of stones and good drainage, with a bit more weight at the bottom of the slope. The bouquet is subtle and true to its grape variety, with notes of stone fruit and a touch of chamomile. Saline on the attack, the wine shows depth and substance. It is well supported by a structuring acidity and subtle bitters that firm up the finish. A fresh, flavorful, and ambitious wine. It can be enjoyed young, but it also offers excellent ageing potential.

The pure, mineral expression of a great white wine from Alsace

The estate

Founded in 1959 following the union of two winemaking families, Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is a true benchmark in Alsace. Although the family's winemaking heritage dates back to 1620, it was this union that shaped the estate as we know it today. Now led by Olivier Humbrecht, the first French winemaker to become a Master of Wine, the estate spans 40 hectares. A pioneer of biodynamic viticulture since the 1990s, the estate is committed to producing authentic terroir wines by drastically limiting yields in favor of quality.

The vineyard

Located in Alsace, the vineyard spans a mosaic of around a hundred plots spread across six villages. Planted at altitudes ranging from 200 to 300 metres, the vines benefit from a dry climate sheltered by the Vosges mountains. The terroirs boast immense geological diversity, combining volcanic, limestone, marl and granite soils. The entire vineyard is farmed according to strict biodynamic principles. Soil work is carried out mostly by hand or with animal traction to preserve the soil's structure and microbial life.

The vintage

The year was marked by particularly hot and dry weather conditions. After an early budbreak, flowering took place between late May and early June. From the end of June, a heatwave and intense drought put the vines to the test. While plots located on the plain suffered greatly from water stress, hillside vines withstood conditions better thanks to their deeper water reserves. Heavy, much-needed rainfall in mid-August finally revived the growth cycle ahead of the harvest.

Winemaking and aging

The winemaking of this Domaine Zind-Humbrecht 2022 stood out for its particularly slow and extended fermentations, carried out exclusively by native yeasts. This phenomenon, linked to a nitrogen deficiency in the soil following the summer drought, required meticulous monitoring in the cellar. The wine then underwent extended aging on its fermentation lees to gain texture and complexity. Bottling takes place late, between 12 and 24 months after harvest.
