Characteristics and tasting tips for Emilio Moro 2023
Tasting
Appearance
This wine displays an intense, deep cherry-red colour with subtle violet and bluish highlights that reflect its youth.
Nose
Highly expressive, the bouquet offers rich aromas of ripe red and black fruit such as blackberry, cherry and blackcurrant. These are harmoniously underscored by notes of vanilla, cocoa, mild coffee and spice from its oak ageing.
Palate
Fleshy and powerful, the palate impresses with its firm structure and seamlessly integrated tannins. Lively freshness brings remarkable balance, carrying indulgent fruit and spice flavours through to a long, lingering and delicately mineral finish.
Food and wine pairings
This Spanish red wine pairs beautifully with grilled red meat, roast lamb, rich dishes in sauce or game. It will also elevate platters of Iberian charcuterie and aged hard cheeses.
Serving and cellaring
For optimal enjoyment, serve this wine at a temperature between 16 and 18°C, and decant it while it is young. With fine ageing potential, it can be enjoyed now or cellared until around 2033.
The authentic, fruit-driven expression of an iconic Ribera del Duero wine
The estate
Although the family's winemaking heritage dates back to 1891, the Emilio Moro bodega was officially founded in 1987 by the second generation. Located in Pesquera de Duero, in the heart of Castile and León in Spain, the estate now enjoys international renown. Currently run by the third generation, Javier, Fabiola and Rubi Moro, the estate combines respect for tradition with modern, sustainable management. Deeply committed to protecting the environment, the house produces authentic wines that reflect the full richness of their terroir.
The vineyard
The grapes come from plots located on the prestigious "Milla de Oro" of Ribera del Duero. Facing south-west, the vines enjoy ideal sun exposure and thrive on stony, clay-limestone soils. Aged between 15 and 25 years, they are subject to an extreme continental climate, which promotes optimal concentration in the berries while preserving their freshness. The estate also employs environmentally friendly practices to protect the biodiversity of its land.
The vintage
The year began with a particularly wet winter, which replenished the water reserves in the soils. This was followed by a dry spring and then a hot summer that ensured full, generous ripening of the grapes. Just before the harvest, timely storms helped to balance the growing cycle, bringing lovely freshness to the crop.
Vinification and ageing
The winemaking process begins with alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at around 28°C for almost eighteen days. Malolactic fermentation then takes place in the same vessels over some twenty days. Finally, this Spanish wine undergoes meticulous ageing for twelve months in French and American oak barrels, which gives it its aromatic complexity.
Grape variety
100% Tempranillo (Tinto Fino).
