Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for the Gevrey-Chambertin Village 2023 by Joseph Drouhin
Tasting notes
Appearance
The ruby colour is vivid, clear and particularly bright.
Nose
Intensely fruity, the bouquet opens with luscious aromas of black cherry and wild blackberry, underlined by a delicate touch of liquorice and a subtle oakiness. Over time, it promises to evolve towards complex nuances of sweet spices, nutmeg, leather and undergrowth.
Palate
The palate reveals a velvety, smooth texture, supported by present yet non-astringent tannins. The balance is remarkable, combining a lovely natural freshness with a fleshy, pulpy character that stretches into a long, harmonious finish.
Food and wine pairing
This red wine pairs wonderfully with roasted or braised meats, such as a fine cut of beef or a veal shank. It also perfectly complements quality poultry, feathered game such as pheasant or quail, as well as mushroom and truffle-based dishes.
Serving and cellaring
It is recommended to serve this Gevrey-Chambertin Village 2023 at a temperature of around 16°C, allowing it a light aeration while young. This wine can be cellared for optimal enjoyment until around 2036.
The elegance and complexity of a red wine from Gevrey-Chambertin by Joseph Drouhin
The estate
Founded in 1880 in Beaune, the House of Joseph Drouhin is a true institution in Burgundy. This historic estate, a pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture since the 1990s, now spans nearly 100 hectares of vines in France. Still family-owned, the estate is currently led by the fourth generation, with Frédéric Drouhin at its helm as president. Renowned for its respectful approach to terroir and natural rhythms, the house crafts wines that express with great precision the diversity and authenticity of the Burgundian climats.
The vineyard
This wine comes from the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation, located in the northern part of the Côte de Nuits. The vines flourish on a terroir renowned for its lean, shallow soils. This reddish-brown, marl-clay soil rests on a limestone base that promotes excellent drainage and naturally moderate yields. Although the house acts here as a négociant, it rigorously selects grapes from trusted partners, ensuring impeccable quality raw material.
The vintage
2023 stands as one of the warmest years ever recorded in the region. Despite this exceptional heat, the growing cycle unfolded optimally, resulting in a generous harvest in both volume and quality. Adapted viticultural practices, such as careful management of the canopy to shade the bunches, allowed the vines to withstand heat stress, resulting in grapes with perfect phenolic ripeness while preserving lovely acidity.
Winemaking and ageing
To craft this Gevrey-Chambertin Village 2023, the grapes are hand-harvested into small perforated crates. The bunches are fully destemmed before maceration and fermentation in small open vats, punctuated by punching down and pumping over under the exclusive action of indigenous yeasts. After gentle vertical pressing, the wine is aged for fourteen to sixteen months in oak barrels, with 20 to 25% new wood that has been air-dried for three years beforehand.
