Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of the Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru 2022 Joseph Drouhin
Tasting
Colour
This French red wine reveals a brilliant colour with vibrant hues ranging from ruby to black cherry.
Nose
With great subtlety, the bouquet reveals aromas of cherry liqueur, blackberry and blueberry, intertwined with delicate floral notes of peony and violet. Fine spicy touches of nutmeg and leather complete this rich olfactory palette.
Palate
Supported by a silky texture and refined tannins, the palate offers a lovely amplitude without heaviness. Vibrant acidity brings freshness, while notes of pepper underline a beautiful balance. The long, persistent finish reveals subtle notes of truffle and game.
Food and wine pairing
This wine pairs harmoniously with feathered game in sauce, roast lamb or slow-cooked dishes such as beef bourguignon. It also complements roast poultry, mushroom or truffle-based recipes, as well as washed-rind cheeses such as Époisses.
Service and storage
For optimal tasting, it is recommended to serve this wine between 16 and 18°C, after decanting for one to two hours. With solid ageing potential, this Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru 2022 can be kept in the cellar until at least 2042.
The elegance and complexity of a Burgundy grand cru
The estate
Founded in 1880 in Beaune, Maison Joseph Drouhin is a historic figure of Burgundy. Now led by the fourth generation, represented by Frédéric, Philippe, Véronique and Laurent Drouhin, the estate oversees a vineyard of around a hundred hectares stretching from Chablis to the Mâconnais. A pioneer in environmental practices, the estate has applied the principles of organic and biodynamic viticulture since the 1990s, reflecting its philosophy of providing natural responses to the challenges of viticulture in order to express the purest identity of its terroirs.
The vineyard
Located in the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin, the terroir from which this Griotte-Chambertin originates is a tiny 2.64-hectare plot, surrounded by other prestigious climats. Its name does not come from the cherry, but from the word "craie" (chalk), referring to the geological composition of its soils. The vines thrive on brown earth, scree and limestone-clay soils rich in marine fossils dating back to the Jurassic period, cultivated using organic and biodynamic methods.
The vintage
2022 stood out as the hottest, driest and sunniest year recorded in the region since the beginning of the twentieth century. Despite these weather conditions and significant temperature variations, disease pressure was perfectly controlled, allowing grapes of excellent phenolic maturity to be harvested.
Winemaking and ageing
The grapes for this Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru 2022 are harvested by hand in small perforated crates, followed by a rigorous sorting process. The winemaking process incorporates 20 to 50% whole clusters, with maceration and fermentation taking place in small open vats using indigenous yeasts over two to three weeks. Gentle punching down and pumping over are carried out before pressing in a vertical press. Finally, the wine is aged for sixteen to twenty months in French oak barrels, 30% of which are new.
Grape variety
100% Pinot Noir.
