Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Saint-Romain Village 2023 by Joseph Drouhin

Tasting

Appearance
The wine reveals a pale white-gold hue, sometimes tinged with green reflections that highlight the youthful character typical of wines from this appellation.

Nose
Particularly aromatic, it first expresses great finesse through scents of white flowers such as honeysuckle and ripe yellow fruits like mirabelle plum. With aeration, the bouquet evolves towards more indulgent notes evoking honey and gingerbread.

Palate
The attack is clean, lively and full of freshness. The wine then unfolds with beautiful body and structured roundness, offering a harmonious balance between generosity and elegance. The finish stands out with a strikingly mineral and stony tone, a true authentic signature of its terroir.

Food and wine pairings

This white wine pairs ideally with delicate fish such as sole or sea bass, as well as with seafood. It also wonderfully accompanies white meats such as poultry served with a light sauce, dishes based on spring or grilled vegetables, and is particularly enjoyable with soft or semi-hard cheeses such as brie and morbier.

Serving and cellaring

To fully appreciate all the nuances of this Saint-Romain Village 2023, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature of 13°C. Endowed with great potential, this wine can be cellared until approximately 2031, with an optimal tasting window between 2027 and 2029.

The estate

A historic figure of Burgundy, the Joseph Drouhin brand oversees a vast 100-hectare estate. A pioneer of organic farming in the region, the house stands out for its deep respect for the terroir and its environmental innovations, such as maritime transport by sailing vessel. Today, the Drouhin family is the current owner, holding 60% of the capital since 2023. Led by Véronique Drouhin, representative of the fourth generation, the estate also shines internationally with a vineyard in Oregon, while preserving the elegance and authenticity of each appellation.

The vineyard

This wine comes from a singular terroir located in the village of Saint-Romain. Perched at an altitude of 400 metres, it is one of the highest vineyards in the Côte de Beaune. The vines flourish at the foot of an impressive amphitheatre of well-exposed limestone cliffs, on predominantly clay-limestone soils. This secluded site is also recognised as a major prehistoric location, home to the region's earliest Celtic and Gallo-Roman vine sanctuaries.

The vintage

The year 2023 stands as one of the warmest ever recorded in Burgundy, surpassing even the temperatures of the previous vintage. Despite these extreme weather conditions, the growing cycle allowed the grapes to reach perfect maturity at the time of harvest.

Vinification and ageing

The making of Saint-Romain Village 2023 begins with manual harvesting in slatted crates, followed by meticulous sorting. The whole bunches undergo slow pneumatic pressing, with rigorous separation of the free-run and last-press juices. After alcoholic and malolactic fermentations, the wine is aged for 12 to 14 months in French oak barrels from high-forest woodlands, with 10 to 15% new oak. The grapes come from the family's own land as well as from purchases from partner producers.
