Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of the Vosne-Romanée 1er cru 2023 by Joseph Drouhin
Tasting notes
Appearance
This red wine reveals a magnificent deep hue, both intense and luminous.
Nose
Wonderfully complex, the aromatic bouquet exudes scents of ripe red and black berries such as morello cherry and strawberry, harmoniously blended with floral notes of violet. Subtle touches of coffee, chocolate and truffle add further richness to the whole.
Palate
Smooth and delicate, the palate seduces with its preserved freshness and generosity. It is built around silky tannins with a noble grain, extending into a persistent and highly elegant finish.
Food and wine pairings
This great wine pairs beautifully with refined meats such as roast beef fillet, noble poultry or feathered game. After a few years of ageing, it will wonderfully enhance dishes featuring fine mushrooms, truffled poultry or well-matured soft cheeses such as Époisses or Brillat-Savarin.
Serving and cellaring
To fully appreciate this 2023 vintage, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature of around 16°C. Boasting excellent potential, it can be enjoyed after about ten years and will continue to evolve favourably until around 2048.
The elegance and purity of a great Burgundy wine
The estate
Founded in 1880 in Beaune, at the heart of the region, the Joseph Drouhin House is a true family institution. Now led by Frédéric Drouhin, representing the fourth generation, the estate oversees a vast domain of around a hundred hectares stretching from Chablis to the Mâconnais. A pioneer in environmental respect, the house has cultivated all of its vines using organic and biodynamic farming for over thirty years. The estate's identity is built on a constant quest for finesse, authentically revealing the purity of each terroir through wines of great elegance.
The vineyard
The grapes used to produce this wine come from the villages of Vosne-Romanée and Flagey-Echezeaux, located in the prestigious Côte de Nuits. The vines flourish on limestone marl soils that provide excellent drainage. Cultivated according to biodynamic principles with a high planting density, this terroir allows the grape variety to express its full complexity and natural finesse.
The vintage
The year 2023 ranks among the hottest ever recorded in Burgundy. Despite these high summer temperatures, the growing cycle allowed for the harvest of berries of generous quality and quantity. The fruit reached optimal ripeness while maintaining a perfect balance and lovely freshness.
Winemaking and ageing
The grapes are hand-harvested in perforated crates, followed by careful sorting. Winemaking incorporates 20 to 50% whole clusters. Fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts in small open vats over two to three weeks, punctuated by punching down and pumping over. After gentle vertical pressing, the wine is aged for 14 to 18 months in French oak barrels, 25% of which are new, made from wood air-dried for three years beforehand.
Grape variety
100% Pinot Noir
