Robert Parker

Joe Czerwinski

A superbly balanced example of this selection, the 2020 Ermitage de l'Orée—sourced from the clay soils of Les Murets—features scents of crushed stone, toasted grain, white peach and ripe melon. Showing no ill effects from its recent bottling at the beginning of September, it's full-bodied, silky and elegant, with a long, harmonious finish.

A complete, captivating white that showcases a wealth of dimension and depth. Offers ripe apple, apricot and green fig flavors layered with warm spices, ground ginger and honeysuckle on a full, broad palate, shored up with salty mineral depth and a gentle lacquer of toast. The exquisitely textured palate also delivers jasmine and smoke elements powered by salty mineral energy. Finessed and built to last. Drink now through 2035. 667 cases made, 20 cases imported.

Decanter

The nose is quite savoury, almond is the presiding aroma, with apple and quince in the background. It has the roundness of De l'Orée but without excessive opulence – this vintage is a little straighter than some. Well-balanced, with a more clearly visible mineral line than a classic vintage of this cuvée, which can be veiled by intense richness when young. Fresh, balanced, more thirst-quenching than a typical De l'Orée, its propensity to opulence slightly tempered. I think this works particularly well this year.

A breathtaking and expansive bouquet of mirabelle tart with a wide spectrum of candied citrus aromas, fresh almonds, plus fresh tarragon and shiso leaf. Fabulous concentration and interplay of creamy richness with mineral freshness. The intensity and purity of the stony finish must be tasted to be believed! A pure marsanne from the eastern part of the appellation with a soil of glacial deposits. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold.

Also all Marsanne from the eastern side of Hermitage, raised in 15% new demi-muids, the 2020 Ermitage De L'Orée is full-bodied and concentrated, yet stays tight and reserved on the palate. Giving up beautiful white currant, crushed stone, spice, honeysuckle, and charcoal aromas and flavors, it’s a serious, age-worthy Hermitage that needs to be forgotten for 3-4 years, and it will evolve for over two decades.

Description

The richness and precision of a white Ermitage wine

The estate

Established since 1808 in Tain-L'Hermitage, the M. Chapoutier house today embodies the elite of the greatest names in wines from the Rhône Valley.

Vinegrower and merchant, Michel Chapoutier has managed over the vintages to lead this family business to the top. The wines of Maison Chapoutier are recognized for their refinement and high quality by the most discerning connoisseurs beyond borders. A man of many hats, Michel Chapoutier holds the world record for 100/100 scores awarded by American critic Robert Parker. Mathilde, Michel Chapoutier's daughter, has taken up the torch of this iconic house, overseeing a vineyard of over 350 hectares across the most prestigious appellations of the northern and southern Rhône Valley.

The vineyard

A parcel selection, this De l'Orée 2020 cuvée from M. Chapoutier is a Ermitage wine made from grapes from the Murets parcel, which owes its uniqueness to its soil composed of very ancient fluvio-glacial alluvium. These old vines, averaging 60 to 70 years old, are known for their low yield, producing high-quality wines.

Vinification and aging

Manual harvest at full maturity. Pressing followed by a settling of the musts in the cold for about 24 hours. The vinification is carried out 50% in demi-muids with regular stirring and 50% in vats. This wine benefits from an aging of 10 to 12 months, including 6 months on lees, accompanied by regular stirring.

Blend

Marsanne (100%).
