An exceptional red wine from the prestigious Bolgheri region in Tuscany
The estate
Created in 1987, Masseto spans approximately 7 hectares in the prestigious Bolgheri region of Tuscany. Owned by the Marchesi de Frescobaldi family since 2005, this estate produces an exceptional 100% Merlot wine on unique clay soils. Masseto rivals the greatest Bordeaux crus and ranks among the world’s most sought-after Italian wines.
The vineyard
The Masseto vineyard benefits from an exceptional location within the IGT Toscana designation in Bolgheri. The unique clay soils, notably the rich blue clay, give the Merlot a particular expression, allowing the production of wines of rare intensity on this exceptional Tuscan terroir.
The vintage
Winter 2022 saw temperatures close to seasonal averages. Spring was marked by coolness and dryness, slightly delaying bud break. From late May, temperatures rose significantly with peaks of 35°C, accompanied by 75 days of heat and drought. The usual summer storms restored the vines’ balance before harvest. September offered ideal conditions with cool nights favoring the accumulation of sugars, aromas and tannins.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes for Masseto 2022 are hand-harvested into 15 kg crates. After destemming and gentle pressing, the musts are transferred by gravity into concrete vats. Each vineyard parcel is vinified separately with spontaneous fermentations using indigenous yeasts at 25–28°C. Maceration lasts 21 to 28 days with 2 to 3 daily pump-overs and rack-and-return as needed. Malolactic fermentation takes place in 100% new barriques. Parcel aging is carried out during the first 12 months in barrels, then Blend for a further 12 months, totaling 24 months in oak, followed by 12 months of bottle maturation.
Grape variety
This wine is predominantly composed of Merlot, Masseto’s emblematic grape variety, complemented by a small proportion of Cabernet Franc harvested last.
