This red is both well-structured and framed with new oak nuances of vanilla, toast and resin, setting the stage for plum, blackberry, fruitcake, mineral and tobacco flavors. There’s a salty element interwoven throughout, along with a fluid feel. Offers fine grip on the lingering finish, so give the dense tannins some time to integrate. Merlot. Best from 2028 through 2043. 410 cases imported.

Decanter

The summer was so arid in 2022 that the vines shut down and ripening was halted until mid-August rains arrived. This helped to preserve acidity in the grapes, giving sensational freshness to balance the rich and finely structured palate. Masseto 2022, then, combines the best of both worlds: fruit ripeness and concentration, and freshness and poise. It's not as immediately seductive as the 2021, but there is so much potential in this long-lived vintage. Scents of cool, damp earth, dark hedgerow berries, Mediterranean scrub, and cocoa and wood give a sense of what is to come once time has untangled everything. Zingy, crunchy acidity steals the show early on, segueing into a mouthful of succulent yet dense dark berries and spice imbued with plenty of energy. Then some balsamic herbs and floral notes lighten the palate, before a touch of salinity and some bitter herbs emerge on the finish, with a refrain of bright cherry. Something special.

Antonio Galloni

The 2022 Masseto is soft, open-knit and relatively easygoing. The mid-weight structure of the year is very much in evidence in a wine that speaks more to finesse than power. Dark red cherry, plum, new leather, licorice and incense gradually open over time, supported by fine, silky tannins that wrap it all together in style. Masseto is typically much more potent in the early going, in 2022 the more refined style that has begun to emerge here along with the style of the year yield a Masseto that is quite elegant. Its balance is beyond reproach, especially in the integration of something that usually requires at least a few years in bottle.

Currently on the market, the 2022 Masseto is 100% Merlot grown on the estate’s distinctive blue clay soils. The wine immediately impresses with freshness, brightness and clarity. It shows firm but integrated tannins with a subtle salty note attributed to sodium-rich clays. According to proprietor Lamberto Frescobaldi, the magic of Masseto lies in its ability to stretch and consolidate across the palate, wrapping itself seamlessly in a kind of symbiosis that feels both expansive and complete. His point comes alive in this edition. Crafted for collectors, this vintage is intense and full yet never tiring, remaining solar and generous. The élevage is deliberately restrained with reduced wood influence despite the use of four coopers, including tonnelleries Taransaud and Baron, and 80% new oak, allowing the Merlot to remain dulcet and precise.

An exceptional red wine from the prestigious Bolgheri region in Tuscany

The estate

Founded in 1987, Masseto covers approximately 7 hectares in the prestigious Bolgheri region of Tuscany. Owned by the Marchesi de Frescobaldi family since 2005, this estate produces an exceptional 100% Merlot on unique clay soils. Masseto competes with the greatest Bordeaux Crus and is one of the most sought-after Italian wines in the world.

The vineyard

The Masseto vineyard benefits from an exceptional location in the IGT Toscana appellation in Bolgheri. The unique clay soils, particularly the rich blue clay, give the Merlot a special expressiveness and allow for the production of wines of rare intensity on this exceptional Tuscan terroir.

The vintage

The winter of 2022 brought temperatures close to the seasonal average. Spring was characterized by marked freshness and dryness, slightly delaying budburst. From late May, temperatures rose significantly with peaks up to 35°C, accompanied by 75 days of heat and drought. The usual summer thunderstorms restored the balance of the vines before the harvest. September offered ideal conditions with cool nights, promoting the accumulation of sugar, aromas and tannins.

Winemaking and ageing

The Masseto 2022 grapes are harvested manually in 15 kg crates. After destemming and gentle pressing, the musts are transferred by gravity into concrete tanks. Each vineyard parcel is vinified separately with spontaneous fermentation using indigenous yeasts at 25–28°C. Maceration lasts 21 to 28 days with 2 to 3 daily pump-overs and rackings as needed. Malolactic fermentation takes place in 100% new barrels. Subsequently, plot-specific ageing takes place for the first 12 months in barrels, followed by blending for another 12 months, totaling 24 months in oak and then 12 months of bottle ageing.

Blend

This wine comprises mainly Merlot, the iconic grape variety of Masseto, complemented by a small proportion of Cabernet Franc, which is harvested last.
