The Authentic Expression of a Great Burgundy Terroir by Maison Olivier Leflaive
The Estate
Founded in 1984 by Olivier Leflaive, the Olivier Leflaive house is located in Puligny-Montrachet, at the heart of Burgundy in France. While the family's winemaking history dates back to 1717, this estate stands out for its innovative model: it cultivates 26 hectares of its own vines and purchases grapes still on the vine across around a hundred hectares, managing the harvest itself. Today, the estate's technical direction is overseen by Solène Panigai, who upholds the excellence and sustainable winegrowing values of the domaine. Olivier Leflaive's international renown is built on this unwavering commitment to quality.
The Vineyard
The climat des Angles is a 4.57-hectare plot located in the upper section of the Volnay appellation. Benefiting from an excellent southeast-facing exposure, this terroir rests on shallow, sloping brown limestone soils that promote good drainage. The vines, averaging forty years of age, are cultivated according to the principles of sustainable farming and harvested by hand to ensure a rigorous selection of fruit.
The Vintage
The year 2024 was marked by particularly demanding weather conditions, with record rainfall and pervasive humidity throughout the growing season. These cooler temperatures and heightened fungal pressure, notably mildew, led to yield disparities from one plot to another, requiring constant attention in the vineyard.
Winemaking and Aging
After careful sorting, the grapes for the Volnay 1er Cru "Clos des Angles" 2024 are entirely destemmed. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in open vats over fifteen days. Aging spans a total of sixteen months: an initial four-month phase in stainless steel tanks for malolactic fermentation, followed by twelve months in French oak barrels (20% new oak) sourced from the forests of the Vosges, Allier, and Jura.
Grape Variety
100% Pinot Noir. This emblematic grape variety finds its historical origins and finest expression in the great terroirs of the Burgundy region.
