A highly complex Riesling with an exceptionally fruity character

The estate
While the Pfaffl estate has established itself as one of the finest estates in Austria and enjoys worldwide renown, it remains first and foremost a family affair. Roman Josef Pfaffl and Heidi Fischer, both passionate about the vine, share the running of the family estate and, thanks to their great expertise, succeed in combining variety with quality. The brother and sister ensure that every single berry is meticulously hand-selected across their 110 or so hectares of vineyards north of Vienna. Alongside this nature-friendly viticulture, a minimal-intervention approach in the cellar gives Pfaffl wines great authenticity, reflecting a mosaic of terroirs.

The vineyard
The Sandlern vineyard, source of the Riesling PASSION Reserve 2019, has a sandy clay soil that allows the grapes to reach full ripeness. In addition to this geology typical of the region, the plot's exposure subjects the vines to an extremely dry climate, forcing them to draw moisture from deep within the soil. The late harvest of these 27-year-old vines gives the Riesling PASSION Reserve 2019 its full complexity.

The vintage
2019 was a dream vintage for the world of wine. A very mild winter was followed by a spring with seasonal temperatures. An alternation of fine days and rainfall helped to avoid periods of drought. The harvest began slightly early, and winegrowers enjoyed beautiful sunny days throughout. Thanks to the ideal conditions of 2019, fully ripe grapes were picked, and all the wines of this vintage are set to reveal an exceptional character.

Winemaking and ageing
The harvest takes place in mid-October. A small, highly skilled team carefully hand-selects the finest berries of this Riesling grape variety. The must extracted from the berries rests for sixteen hours before being gently pressed at low pressure in a pneumatic press. After 7 months of fermentation in large acacia casks, the wine is bottled in the Pfaffl estate's cellars.

Nose
The remarkable intensity of rose, enhanced by aromas of peach, apricot and mango, is immediately apparent. Very fruity on the nose.
Palate
The acidity, minerality and fruity character of this Riesling PASSION Reserve 2019 make it a highly complex wine with exceptional length.

Food and wine pairing
Riesling PASSION Reserve 2019 beautifully complements all fish and seafood dishes, as well as spicy Asian cuisine. It also pairs very well with meats served with a light sauce.

Serving and cellaring
Riesling PASSION Reserve 2019 is a true delight on the palate from 2020 and can be enjoyed until 2029. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 12°C.
