Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of the Bâtard-Montrachet Grand cru 2023 Pierre Girardin
Tasting
Colour
The colour reveals a brilliant golden yellow hue, enhanced by delicate emerald highlights. Limpid and bright, it reflects the great purity of this white wine.
Nose
Initially restrained, the bouquet unfolds with aeration to reveal gourmand aromas of toasted bread, honey and roasted almonds. It then reveals a lovely maturity through notes of yellow fruits such as peach and apricot, enhanced by a mineral touch, nuances of orange blossom and a hint of white pepper.
Palate
The attack is full and generous, perfectly balanced by an acid backbone of great saline precision. The mid-palate offers a silky, enveloping texture, releasing flavours of creamy butter, brioche and hazelnut. The finish, of exceptional persistence, lingers on refreshing citrus notes.
Food and wine pairing
This great white wine wonderfully complements noble seafood such as lobster, crayfish or caviar. It also pairs beautifully with pan-seared foie gras, firm-fleshed fish such as monkfish, as well as white meats and veal sweetbreads served with a creamy mushroom sauce. As for cheeses, it pairs perfectly with a brie or a well-aged camembert.
Service and storage
To fully appreciate the complexity of the Bâtard-Montrachet Grand cru 2023, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 12 and 14°C. Endowed with remarkable ageing potential, this wine can be cellared and will be fully enjoyable until around 2035.
Other characteristics
In order to preserve the full aromatic profile and natural energy of this wine, it is bottled without any prior fining or filtration.
The elegance and mineral power of a great white Burgundy grand cru
The estate
Founded in 2016 in Meursault, Domaine Pierre Girardin embodies the renewal of Burgundy. Representing the thirteenth generation of an illustrious winemaking family, Pierre-Vincent Girardin is the current owner of this 4.5-hectare estate. Having started out at just twenty-one years old, he has managed to establish a modern, refined vision, while benefiting from privileged access to some of the region's finest terroirs. Committed to an environmentally friendly approach with a conversion to organic farming, Pierre Girardin crafts wines prized for their purity, tension and striking minerality.
The vineyard
The terroir of Bâtard-Montrachet extends over gentle slopes situated between 240 and 250 metres in altitude. This legendary Climat is distinguished by particularly thick brown limestone soils, rich in clay in their lower section, resting on a bedrock of Jurassic limestone. The vines are planted at a very high density, exceeding 9,000 vines per hectare, which encourages deep rooting and optimal concentration in the grapes.
The vintage
The year 2023 stands out for its extreme weather conditions, ranking among the hottest ever recorded in the region. The growing cycle was marked by intense heat and a notable water deficit, leading to a natural concentration in the berries. Faced with these summer temperatures, harvesting began early, in the first days of September, allowing fruit of perfect maturity to be picked while preserving essential freshness.
Winemaking and ageing
The making of the Bâtard-Montrachet Grand cru 2023 begins with very gentle whole-bunch pressing, followed by natural static settling. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place simultaneously in custom-made oak barrels with a capacity of 456 litres. The wine is then aged meticulously on full lees for eighteen months, with no stirring of the lees, in order to preserve the tension and authentic expression of the terroir.
