Robert Parker

William Kelley

Broad and concentrated, the 2020 Roc de Cambes unwinds in the glass with aromas of cassis, plums, wood smoke, violets and espresso roast. Medium to full-bodied, rich and velvety, with a fleshy core of fruit and powdery structuring tannins, this is the most muscular wine in Mitjaville's cellar.

Decanter

Smoky character on the attack, carefully interplayed with cloves, grilled tobacco, damson and red cherry fruits. Good stuff, nuanced and mouthwatering.

The 2020 Roc de Cambes is a potent, reticent wine that is going to need at least a few years to come into its own. Bright red-toned fruit, crushed flowers, blood orange, mint and dried herbs open first. Vibrant acids and open-knit aromatics lend energy as the 2020 gradually unfurls in the glass, with the Cabernet very much driving the flavor profile and overall feel. This exotic beauty is a total stunner. Give it time, though.

Dark garnet in color, the wine sports a complex nose of espresso, spice box, forest leaf, tobacco leaf and dark red pit fruits. Sweet and savory, spicy and fresh, with dusty tannins and plenty of ripe, earthy, salty fruits on the palate and in the finish, this character filled wine has length and complexity. 91-93 Pts

Another absolute gem of a wine is the 2020 Roc De Cambes, which is mostly Merlot from vines just next to the Domaine de Cambes vineyards. Black cherries, plums, black raspberries, vanilla bean, camphor, and graphite are just some of its nuances, and this concentrated, singular, medium- to full-bodied beauty is going to offer tons of pleasure over the coming 15 years as well.

Deep purple with an opaque core and a purple rim. Complex bouquet of rosewood, dark precious wood and roasted raspberry seeds, with licorice and Dominican tobacco in the background. On the rich palate, creamy texture, tightly knit tannic framework, finely grained extract, supportive drive and brawny body. In the focused finish, black-berried contours, dark minerality and delicate astringency.

Kunz Barrel Sample 2021: dense, creamy, complex, sweet bouquet, strawberry jelly, blackberry jelly, hazelnut cream, mocha, pralines, graphite, dried fruit. Dense, balanced, full, creamy palate with powerful, sweet fruit, a finely opulent, tightly woven structure, varied, powerful, sweet aromatics, plenty of fine tannins, and a very long, dense, powerful finish with sweet echoes. Has room to improve.

Description

A rich and fruity wine from Côtes de Bourg

The estate

Nestled against the first hillside of Côtes de Bourg, facing the estuary, Roc de Cambes forms an amphitheater of slopes sheltering a 14th-century cellar. Here, the light, softened by the Gironde, has long provided steady photosynthesis and fruits of beautiful precision. In 1988, François Mitjavile acquired the estate and recognized the evidence of a great site: having been unable to expand in Saint-Émilion after Tertre Roteboeuf, he chose these slopes with their protective microclimate, where frost, hail, and heat spikes fade away. The first vinification, that same year, left a vibrant memory: standing before the vat, the maceration complete, he tasted the wine while gazing at the hills and already perceived the singular aromatic landscape of the cru.

The vineyard

The estate extends over about ten hectares in the Côtes de Bourg appellation, planted primarily with Merlot (80–85%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (15–20%), with a historical presence of Malbec. The vines, often forty or fifty years old, carry the memory of seasons and concentrate the sap of years. On slopes of heavy clay and limestone, water drains when it rains too much, the rock nourishes when drought returns, the cold slides toward the plain, and hail proves less cruel: so many graces that allow the vine to endure.

Vinification and aging

The vinification remains true to the estate's spirit: concrete vats, malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels, followed by patient aging of 18 to 24 months, half of which in new wood.

Grape varieties

This Roc de Cambes 2020 is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec.
