Description
Tasting notes and characteristics of Roc de Cambes 2022
Tasting
Appearance
The wine reveals a deep red colour with garnet and purple hues. Clear and pure, it stands out for its intensity and brilliance.
Nose
Remarkably forthright, the nose opens onto an intense and complex aromatic bouquet, blending black fruit aromas (blackcurrant, cherry, plum, blackberry) with floral notes of iris and peony. With aeration, subtle hints of spice, dark chocolate, liquorice and cigar box emerge, complemented by nuances of leather, fresh mint and pepper.
Palate
The attack is velvety and opulent, introducing a palate that is both rich and concentrated. With moderate acidity providing a lovely freshness, the palate is underpinned by silky, refined tannins. The finish, of remarkable length, lingers on delicate chalky notes.
Food and wine pairings
This red wine pairs beautifully with roasted or grilled meats such as beef, lamb, veal or duck. It also goes very well with mushroom-based dishes in sauce, meaty fish such as tuna, lightly spiced Asian cuisine, as well as platters of charcuterie and aged cheeses.
Serving and cellaring
For optimal tasting, it is recommended to serve Roc de Cambes 2022 at a temperature between 15.5 and 17°C. In its youth, decanting for about two hours is recommended to allow its full complexity to unfold. This cellaring wine can be enjoyed from 2026 and will continue to evolve favourably until around 2042.
The richness and precision of a red wine from the Côtes de Bourg
The estate
Acquired in 1988 by François Mitjavile and his wife, Château Roc de Cambes is a historic property whose origins date back to the 18th century, and which even houses a 14th-century cellar. Located in the Bordeaux region, this estate has been elevated to the top of its appellation thanks to a demanding winemaking philosophy that favours concentration and ripeness. Today, François Mitjavile, alongside his daughter Nina, still runs the Roc de Cambes estate. They perpetuate an artisanal expertise and a singular vision that have earned their wines international renown.
The vineyard
Set on the Croûtes hillsides, the finest terroir of the Côtes de Bourg appellation, the vineyard extends over 12 hectares. The vines, aged between 30 and 70 years, are planted in an amphitheatre on clay-limestone soils with a south and south-west exposure. The proximity of the Gironde estuary provides a protective microclimate that regulates temperatures. The estate practises sustainable viticulture with permanent grass cover and Royat cordon pruning, thus encouraging the natural concentration of the grapes.
The vintage
The 2022 vintage was marked by a particularly hot summer, leading to rapid berry ripening. In order to achieve optimal physiological ripeness without excess sugar, the harvest was deliberately delayed until the end of September. This decision yielded grapes of remarkable balance, combining richness and freshness despite the climatic challenges of the season.
Winemaking and ageing
The harvest is entirely manual, followed by a rigorous selection of the berries. Vinification is carried out traditionally in concrete vats, while malolactic fermentation takes place spontaneously in French oak barrels. Roc de Cambes 2022 is aged for 24 months, exclusively in new barrels, with careful homogenisation during each racking.
Grape varieties
Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec.
