Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Aleste 2022 by Sandrone Luciano
Tasting Notes
Appearance
This wine reveals a beautiful ruby colour, bright and clear, with an intensity ranging from medium to deep.
Nose
The bouquet is particularly intense, revealing aromas of cherry and raspberry, intertwined with notes of undergrowth, minerals, fresh spices and touches of oak.
Palate
Both robust and structured, the palate retains great elegance without any heaviness. Red fruit dominates at first, followed by spicy and woody nuances. The powerful tannins will need a little patience to fully integrate. The finish lingers on notes of red fruit, graphite and a firm tannic backbone.
Food and Wine Pairing
This wine will pair wonderfully with rich, braised meats such as ossobuco, roast duck with figs or game-based dishes. It will also match beautifully with long-aged cheeses such as parmesan or Castelmagno.
Serving and Cellaring
The 2022 vintage is a wine built for ageing, to be enjoyed until around 2045. It is advisable to wait until 2026 to begin tasting it at its best.
An Exceptional Barolo from Sandrone Luciano in the Heart of Piedmont
The Estate
Officially founded in 1978 by Luciano Sandrone, the estate is a landmark name in Piedmont. After starting out in a garage in 1977, the estate rose to the very top of its appellation. Today, following the passing of its founder, the property is led by his daughter Barbara, his brother Luca and his wife Mariuccia. Together, they passionately oversee a vineyard of around 27 hectares spread between the Langa and the Roero, carrying on a unique style that brilliantly blends tradition and modernity.
The Vineyard
The grapes come exclusively from the famous historic hillside of Cannubi Boschis, located in the village of Barolo. Farmed by the estate since 1985, this plot benefits from a fine south-east-facing exposure. The vines thrive on soils made up of moderately compact marl, a terroir renowned for giving the wine great elegance and beautiful transparency.
The Vintage
2022 was marked by the vine's resilience in the face of challenging weather conditions. After a dry autumn and snowfall in December, winter proved mild and dry, punctuated by a brief cold spell. Spring brought much-needed rain before giving way to a hot, dry period. Fortunately, cool nights helped balance out the temperatures. Ripening accelerated, leading to an early harvest of around two weeks, between 26 September and 6 October. Although smaller, the berries proved perfectly healthy and well-balanced in acidity and fruit.
Winemaking and Ageing
For this wine, fermentation begins spontaneously thanks to indigenous yeasts. Maceration and alcoholic fermentation take place in open steel vats, followed by complete malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged in 500-litre French oak barrels. Finally, this Italian wine spends a further 18 months in bottle before release.
